Okay look everyone says the tacoma 4.0 is bullet proof. I believe that. But to what extent, how many more miles do you think i can expect out of this truck. Many of the miles have been from towing and driving long distances because it was used as a work truck for about 10 years

    Currently at about 280,xxx
    6speed manual DCSB TRD OR

I was thinking i would sell in a year or two so i haven’t been putting much money into it but if i can get a lot more miles then maybe i’ll invest more into it (mods)

Eventually it will need headgaskets, cats, and timing chains, but it will trigger a code before it breaks down.

Only thing that kills 4.0's is neglect and water.

Like Bishop said, they are pretty tough engines.
However, yours is a 2005 and they have a history with Head Gasket issues.
If you don’t want t9 spend money on it “later”, I probably not invest a lot into it “now”.
As on, aftermarket accessories, lift, and lights.

I would do normal maintenance and continue to drive it.
Or, Trade or Sell it at some point.

    Invest more how?

Throw money into maintenance items? I probably would if I were in your shoes. Keep it going until the block cracks and the wheels fall off.

Or do you mean to throw money at mods and upgrades? Because at that age I probably wouldn't.

No one here knows how much longer your truck will run. You need to decide if the truck is worth keeping (how much do you like it and how much longer you would like to drive it) then "budget" your maintenance and repairs accordingly. If you are going to only drive it for another year or so, "band-aid" repairs. If you plan on a longer term relationship, make repairs or replace parts / components, that will go the distance - A 15 yr old high mileage truck just might not be worth any significant additional investment. But, depending on your financial circumstances, it just might be.

Isn't this like asking "how long will I live?"

Maintenance and preventative maintenance are the keys to long vehicle life.

My guess is another 10k miles. Your Tacoma will likely have a CEL and sputter to it's end at the parking lot of Bare Minimum topless bar. Calls to your buddies go unanswered and posting a Help thread on TW was unsuccessful due to site maintenance. You reluctantly call your wife or gf, who is still angered from the prior night due to you forgetting your anniversary, to come pick you up. Well, the truck will be the least of your problems now. I would save up for a beater and money for an apt.

Pretend you have a new truck for four months. Make those payments to a bank account, it will add up quick, take said money and upgrade several things to make it last. Timing belt, water pump, brakes, suspension, u joints, bushings, etc. It will start to, either take to these upgrades and run really well, or it might just run the same, again, either way, you're putting more life into the truck.

And it might blow the head gasket tomorrow, who knows.....

It's only the 05/06's that eventually need head gaskets right? The 07+ are redesigned and good for a million miles eh?

Head gaskets can fail on any tacoma , any year model. Owner maintenance is key on how long a vehicle will last. Any yr model tacoma owner would be happy to have their HG make it to 280k miles like the OP's '05 tacoma.
