I was thinking a piece of wood underneath as well, just haven’t gotten around to saying it

 

Hand drilling. Someday I'll get a drill press.

I'm using a piece of 1" foam insulation as a backer currently. I had the bit chucked in as far as it would go, so only maybe 1/4" was out of the chuck. I'm not sure what I'd gain from a center drill. Other than probably better quality than my HF drill index that I'm currently using. Are center drills ground at a different angle?

 

Just watched this car go across the block. It’s all original, never had anything done to it and they didn’t sell it at $200k

Not different angle just shorter and made for a pilot hole. These I'll post a picture of are much larger than what you would need. Also they make stub length or screw machine length drill bits that are shorter, a little more stout. I think you may be better off hanging that drill bit out and not on the flute's of the bit, easier breaking I would think, less flex.

 

It looks like sign says 1970 and 429 engine. The price is still crazy regardless. Looks pristine to say the least, and all original. Must have taken the best storage conditions available. I'm not especially a Ford guy but I appreciate all old iron.

 

I was actually thinking send it to you...5-10 minutes of putting some numbers in, clamp it down and done in 1/2 hour?

 

I’m a Ford guy, I sold my ‘89 Thunderbird SC (supercharged 5 speed, low production numbers) about 6 years ago. I just saw it pop up on Facebook Marketplace in horrendous condition. It breaks my heart. I was storing it for a father/son project someday, but came to realize it needed to be driven more.

 

Sorry to hear...sounds like it was driven more then...sad so many vehicles just nothing more than transportation device and often neglected. I remember those T Birds well my Uncle had one but no SC and auto.

 

I've used center drills in the past when I had access to a machine shop. Just didn't know if they were ground at a different angle than standard drill bits. Just ordered a handful of short 118° #48 drill bits.

Haha. That would make life easier. However, it'd likely be a pain to setup, since the case cover is u-shaped.

 

Thats a sweet car. Share a pic if you can. I kinda did the same with my Bette I had several years ago. It was a garage queen that I slowly fixed up.

 

And then there's me with a Fiat that I bought with the intention of working on, did nothing with for a few years then sold it.

 

I have a project that I'm hoping to start in 3-5 years, starting to save up for my shop/apartment this year and after that I have a few repairs to make to my grandpas 1990 f-150 (My sister and I bought it from Grandma after he passed) but once I finish that I can start working on the other (bigger) projects.
She (Lila) has been in the family since she was about 10, she's a '65 C10 with the 230 (I think, it may be a 250) and 3 on the tree, I have a 350 TBI and 700R4 waiting to go into her but I may end up keeping it stock (if it's salvageable) and give the engine/trans to my dad for his '51 3100.

 

Learned to drive stick on my stepdads ‘72 Ford Econoline van with a 3 on the tree, that was a fun time

 

I've seen a plunge router setup as a makeshift drill press

 

A buddy and I did the same thing in college with a 70s Triumph. We bought it off a co-worker of mine and were going to use it to race autocross. We rebuilt the carb and did a few other odds and ends before getting busy with school then we sold it.
