There likely isn't enough materials or power capacity for everything to go electric. Tesla was supposed to release a semi in 2019 and now that's pushed off till 2021. The other company Nikola was found to be a fraud and rolled their prototype down a hill.

The entire sector is filled with pipe dreams and fraud right now. I can't blame Toyota for going slow. It might be ICE vehicles that subsidize the loss of selling EVs when the times comes

Definitely not enough capacity in the power industry or distribution networks for all vehicles to be electric (I work in that industry), as the Toyota CEO pointed out in the article linked above by @shakerhood.
Electric vehicles aren’t pipe dreams though, they’re coming. Electric Ford F150 is expected 2021 -2022 for example. Maybe browse this list (came out Aug. 2020 so a little dated):
    https://www.caranddriver.com/news/g29994375/future-electric-cars-trucks/
If it’s not full electric, it’s going to at least be a hybrid electric for most personal vehicles around 2025 or so.

I don't know why this thread is making me so angry. I already know I'm likely to never buy another gas vehicle again, and I should be well into my 60s by the time I get rid of my Tacoma.

I’d buy a plug in hybrid right away. Toyota has nailed its hybrid tech. My other car is a phev and I can’t say enough about how amazing it is. I can drive to and from work all electric never needing to stop at a gas station but I can do cross country trips on gas if I need it getting 50mpg. I can remote start it in my garage with my phone or tell Alexa to do it to heat or cool it with the door closed keeping the snow out. The silent instant throttle response and torque is insane like nothing I’ve ever experienced in a four door sedan. It recharges going down hill and braking, it’s so cool seeing my “fuel gauge” refill coming down the mountain.

For camping it would be a game changer, do your trail all on gas but if you run out no worries with an extra 70 miles of electric range. Massive battery bank and power inverter that could power all the gear you want including 220v welders on the job site or trail all rechargeable by just running the engine. My electric cars giant battery ran my entire house for a week during one power outage.

Anyone who doesn’t believe EV is the future would change their mind if the lived with one for a week. There’s a reason Tesla can have such terrible customer service and quality control but their owners still love and speak highly of them it really is whole new and exciting driving experience.

I’m with you. Would love to see a plug in hybrid Tacoma. Would make a perfect off road truck as well with that big ass battery for power.

Build off the FJ platform which already had fully boxed frame, disc brakes, and easy to mount rock rails... seriously like $150 for a set of steel rock rails that attached to the frame. Also fits the manual shift transfer and cool full time 4wd manual transmission for us manual folks, part time 4wd with manual shift transfer for automatics.

Then delineate better. SR - Sport - Limited with their own set of gizmos and exclusive features. SR5 - Offroad - Pro also with their own features. Owners can play pin the tail in the donkey on here with swapping parts, but sell them as a product with a clear focus. I think the Pro line should have a nice textured interior floor not carpet and a larger size fuel tank and the limited line should have shocks that cushion your rear like a pillow and all the latest driver aides.

Both top of the line power tail gate. Not just locks, but dropping and lifting.

Those multifunction tailgate on GMCs won't age well. I picture those things just being filled with broken parts and the functionality of a stopped up toilet.

Nothing like going to the Home Depot only to find the tailgate won't drop. I'll stick with rods and mechanical latches. The power tailgate is something i'd expect Charles who's 70 to sell his 60 year old wife Carol on. Truck tailgates are just too abused for this level of techy bullshit

When someone says power gate I see a commercial truck/work truck lift gate for lifting pallets and appliances, and I kind of want one.

That GM step notch on the bumper is nice for getting into the bed when the gate is down

You say that.... knowing that only about 1% of the owners are going to use the truck as a truck.
I think they will be fine because the demographic that bought it won't even drop the tailgate.
Just like you and I know the demographic that buys the most Tacomas won't ever get it dirty or pull a trailer or or or. Their biggest concern is which ceramic wax looks best on their MGM Tacoma.

I wish my Tundra had a corner step like Chevy does. 30 years ago I just hopped up on the tailgate. Um, now I need a step.
