12/15/2022 I have edited this post after all was said and done. PLEASE READ ME!

If you read through this thread, you can follow how I learned as I went with this swap. If you get confused, just keep reading, it all unwinds and I explain all.

The way I did all of this certainly isn’t the only way to go about it. There’s several options at every step. If you’re seriously considering doing this, you’ll learn and choose the best option for your situation as you go as well. I enjoyed the hell out of making this work. And, I really love the new ratios and smooth shifting. I’m sure that you will too.

    ——————————————————————————————————————————
As a sister thread to my throwout bearing and clutch system thread; This thread will be where to discuss the internal happenings of the RA60/61 F transmissions.

I'll be diving into my transmission very soon to address a few issues and to possibly switch out the necessary components to get the FJcruisers' .799 OD.

    Well, maybe not...

Originally I had planned to re-build my existing RA60F and make some improvements. But, as it turned out, I ended up swapping to an RC62F transmission out of a 3rd gen Tacoma in lieu of going through the RA60F trans. I like the ratios. I like the two overdrives. I like that the quill is NOT aluminum. I like that it is a newer design. The reverse ratio kind of sucks. But, that complaint seems to be common to both the 2nd and 3rd gen owners. I’ll call that a wash.

I am still planning to run a Tilton hydraulic release bearing. As for the shifter, it’s either the stock 3rd gen one or a Core/Hurst short shifter. That’s all hinging on what the transmission shows up equipped with.

    EDIT:

So, A lot of people have asked for me to list what parts I used to make all of this work. Here ya go.

90119-A0234 X 6 These are the bolts that hold the pressure plate to the flywheel.

90105-10294 x 8 These are the flywheel to crankshaft bolts.

    12371-0P250 x 1 This is the rear trans mount/insulator.

90119-A0210 x 4 These are the 10mm bolts that hold the rear mount to the crossmember. The RA trans uses 8mm bolts here.

90080-43036 x 2 These are the exhaust donuts where the Y-pipe meets the manifolds.

04007-13104 x 3 These are the U-joints I used when I had the driveshaft shortened and balanced.

31121-04030 x 1 This cover closes up the inspection hole in the bell housing. My tranny did not have it in place when I received it.

33584-0K010 x 1 This is the gasket for the shifter retainer housing.

96721-35063 x 1 This is the large o-ring that seals the transfer case to the back of the transmission.

90950-01841 x 4 These are the little hole plugs I used to seal up the small holes in the floor that were left unused when I relocated the shifter boot.

90467-09205 x 4 These are the hole seals that mate with the clips that hold the shift boot in place. The old ones will be trashed.

90467-07066-22 x 4 These are the clips that hold the shift boot in place.

So, at this point, I’m still open to all ideas. I’ve heard of T56 swaps. But I’m not positive that I can retain my 4wd with that setup. Maybe @Torspd can chime in here.

I’m also very much liking the RC62F ratios. I’ve always felt this truck needs “another gear” beyond sixth. And I am constantly finding myself skipping gears during normal driving.

    RC62F ratios:
    3.982
    2.017
    1.321
    1.000
    .848
    .713

    RA60F ratios:
    4.171
    2.190
    1.488
    1.193
    1.000
    .849 or .799 for RA61F FJcruiser

Edit: So, it does in fact appear that this trans is compatible with the 2nd gen transfer case. Win.

I’m also pretty dang sure that it’ll bolt directly to the engine no problem. Being that they’re the same RWD GR engine family. Does anyone have any insight on this transmission going into a 2nd gen?

@Jowett I could use your expertise here.

T56 Magnum mated to the BW AWD transfer case. That's the ticket.

A better ratio sixth would be great. Also if something has a better reverse gear. Without riding the clutch it seems reverse was made for 20 mph backwards.

I could be wrong here. But, by the looks of things, the transfer case may just swap!

    3rd gen

If that is truly the case, then I'm seriously thinking of ditching this tranny completely in lieu of the RC62F.
