Where to get a Skid Controller ECU? 2K 3.4L TRD Off Road.

This is 2K Tacoma 3.4L Extra Cab TRD Off Road 4WD.

Ok it's time to see if I can fix the Taco. . . Maybe.

I've searched a bunch in this and other forums. Will check the brake fluid, clean all the gunk, check the connectors, fuse etc...

The symptom is I barely touched the brakes and the ABS kicked in. This happened a few times over a week and the ABS light has been on ever since. I also need to replace the 1/2 shafts which have the reluctor on there. So it's possibly related.

The dealer said I needed a skid controller ECU (ABS computer). They wanted like $2500 to fix it and I declined their offer. I suspected they went with that because every code says something "or ECU". This was diagnosed a few years back and no details other than it's broken. It's a weekend truck and I don't care much about ABS, but I don't like lights on either. So now I'm seeing if there is a cheaper way to fix it.

Remember this is a 2000 and OBD II isn't really what it is today. I've seen a bunch of videos that tell me how to jump the connector and count the flashes to get the code. No problem I can do that, I'm not sure the Toyota Tech did that.

It's entirely possible the ECU connector or ABS wheel sensors connectors have corrosion. Or a wheel sensor is shot. That stuff should be pretty simple to diagnose and fix. I can do that.

On the chance that the dealer is correct, where do I even get the skid controller? I've checked Olathe Toyota, Bam Wholesale, Toyota Parts Deal. The part number is 44050-04010 and it seems to be discontinued.

Thoughts on the wrecking yard parts or the "repair kit"?

 

I have been looking for one for myself on EBay. I saw one on EBay couple of weeks ago but the seller was asking more than $1K, too much for a used ECU. The ABS ECU’s for our trucks are hard to find. The wrecking yard I tried are PYP here in LA but no luck. Unfortunately, our trucks don’t make it to wrecking yards. I’ve been thinking about get it repaired here in LA by a local shop for $150, but I still have some more troubleshooting to do. Did you fix yours? thank you.

 

The OBDII came into effect in 1996 no counting of flashes in your system

Since I deleted the ABS system I can`t say if the lower end devices can read ABS codes

About the only thing that can cause damage is getting water inside or a massive voltage spike.

Gotta be someone who can rebuild them I have had a few ECM`s rebuilt I would need to look to find the vendor

Maybe time to do away with the ABS brakes .
