FYI - Diode Dynamics SSC2 LED Pods

Right now i have 3 PIAA crystal ions on a light bar in front of grill. Doesn't have to be crazy since I don't off-road

Got some sports in the flood pattern. More or less got them to play around with. I am however, impressed with the output for their size. After messing with them, I plan to get ditch light extension brackets and using these along with the ss3’s in a driving pattern. If I had to complain about one thing, it’s the plug and how it’s exposed. I know they’re water tight, but I still plan to do something different that what I have, if anything, just some jig shrink tubing to hide the wires.

 

Waiting on a switch pro bracket, so they aren't wired in yet.

Not a deal breaker for me for the quality of the product and output. I know I can make it disappear. But I’m also waiting to see others ideas on what they did as more people get their hands on them.

 

The wiring isn't really "exposed" as the ends of the wire are terminated in waterproof seals as part of the deutsch plug assembly. The insulation itself is also waterproof. I suppose you could put a large heat-shrink boot over the wires and loom shield, but it would just be for aesthetics.

 

Is the accent lighting decent for being seen by other motorists? I’m thinking of doing a retrofit with these replacing the brake light / tail light in the red part of the housing in my first gen with the tail light being the accent lighting and the brake light being the regular led with the oem lens diffusing.

 

I asked sort of the same question in the fog thread... I was told the red backlight would not be bright enough for a third brake light (legally or otherwise), but I am not sure about a taillight for nighttime use. I would guess that the backlight would not be quite enough, especially through the additional taillight red housing. And with a directional light, you're not going to light the interior of the reflector the way a halogen bulb would.

And the brake light (full power) would likely be WAY too bright.

 

Here's what I've been considering my setup from which I know is "for offroad use only" but a third brake light S2 will be used regardless of on or off road if you're putting it on a street / offroading vehicle and that's their main focus - green sticker trucks just have rear facing light bars.

The other options are KC Cyclones but I'd like something I could remove the lenses and then have more light at night off road - there are spots I made for aux lighting already. Other than that I'd look into doing some 1/2 power setup with my Switchpros and using a brake light trigger for full power.

 

A buddy of mine has something similar for his Silverado. He likes it a lot but I do think the brake lights are not as noticeable as stock (his brake light is 3 tiny LED bulbs in between the S2 lamps). Useful as a chase and cargo light though.

 

SSC2 Sport - SAE Fog/Wide Pattern

The SSC2 sport is slightly less bright compared to the stock Rigid fog lights. However the beam height is very narrow on the SSC2, and very wide. Really happy about that.

Mounted using Calirasied low profile ditch brackets.

I could not find any OEM style 3 way switches, which are required for the SSC2 due to the backlight feature. I mounted the stock harness 3 way switch by drilling out a hole in the driver's switch panel.



The last half inch of the wiring harness has exposed colored wires, as well as grey & orange plastic. Covered that up, as it was a bit annoying to look at while driving.

Overall very happy with this pair of lights from Diode Dynamics. I have already ordered an additional pair of SSC2 Pro in amber (Combo pattern).

 

I bought a pair of yellow "Sport" output ones with flood lenses to put on my Prinsu rack as turn signals. I want them to be bright but I don't want to be a dick - do you think they'll be okay?

By the way, you don't really need to have a 3-way switch. The primary lights will override the backlight LEDs when switched on. And the backlights have very little power consumption. So for example, you could tap them into the parking light circuit with no need for a separate relay.

Although I'm still trying to figure out a practical reason for the backlights at all.
