Other than you just not going low enough I don't see anything wrong.

You said you were in therapy for 4 weeks, what did your therapist say about it?

Typically once my training takes off I do have the general rule that runs need to be an hour or more. Especially when the mileage gets high. I think it prevents you from doing bull shit little runs to add mileage.

The older I get and the more experience I get, the more I do think there are junk miles and they should be a avoided if one is running a program intended at increasing performance. You want all your workouts to be intentional and serve a purpose, anything that doesn't serve a purpose just interferes negatively with recovery.

I actually feel the same about super long runs. I did a back to back long run my last training cycle that was 16 one day 24 the next. Most I ever ran, 70 mile week. Won't do it again. The 70 mile week I will, not the second run.

Volume is what prepares you for long distance, not the long run. People seem to place too much psychological importance on a single workout. I think what's more important than the 60 minute guideline is the 2.5-3 hour guide line. Workouts past 2.5-3 hours come with diminishing value. That 24 hour run I did added zero value to my training. I was trying to see if I would have any stomach issues after 4 hours, I honestly don't have stomach issues and don't think outside of a 50 miler will be able to simulate that, so that will be a race day only type of experience.
End of the day that run burned me out and fucked up my taper for the race.

This training cycle I think I'm going to try to try to keep most of my runs in that range. For me that can mean for the most part maxing out runs around 17-18 miles for my slow ass self. So almost carry a Hansons mentality for ultra running.

Are there similar concepts in cycling?

Also any off chance you have any experience with Carmichael Training Systems (CTS) Trainright memberships? or use Training Peaks?

    YOU CAN'T!?!?

    :)

Trust me, I'd rather go run 15. The shorter runs just don't do it for me. My usual cycle when I was running was 3 swim days, 2 cycle days, then a 15 mile run on my Saturday. Then a rest day. I'd usually throw strength training in there a couple of days. Mostly bodyweight.

I've never used any formal training plan. Lots of friends like Training Peaks. It's just me, and probably held me back from my full potential, but I can't get too science-y about my training. I do it by feel. My goals are probably different from yours. As hokie/hippy dippy as it may sound I do my stuff for the mental and spiritual side of things. Hence the longer duration activities. Gotta get in The Void.

If you want a cool read that touches on that aspect of endurance running check out 'What I Talk About When I Talk About Running'. Japanese author. Can't remember his name. It'll be easy to find. It's really good. And he's a badass.

Either way have fun, enjoy your body, do what feels right, and be proud of your self. Sounds as though you're doing some incredible stuff. My old PT guy and trainer used to say I was what he called "Casual Elite". Not semi-pro or anything close to pro but could stomp the average person into the ground. Always made me laugh. I jut want to be able to go hike 20 miles and tag 8kft in gain and NOT be sore the next day. That's the level of fitness I shoot for and keep year around. Take care.....it's 2021!!!!!! Hell. Yeah.

This is how I feel about Training Peaks. I may be interested in doing the CTS Trainright membership just to have access to training programs for $25/mo. But it comes with a Premium Training Peaks membership and I'm a data/math nerd so I get super drawn into all of that when it's available to me. And that's my fear is getting caught up in data points that really add no value to my training. It can become distracting and take away from the quality of your training.
I'd rather just go based on how I feel. I have enough experience to know when I'm over doing it and when I need to chill. I don't need some fancy spreadsheet to tell me that. Heck I won't even get a HR chest strap/monitor because then it means I'm paying less attention to how I feel on a run. It only takes a tiny amount of self awareness to know where your HR is without a device telling you.

My goals for 2021 are just to enjoy myself.

I want to race and have that race experience, but it comes at a price right. Like for a 3-4 days after my 50k ultra I was trashed. I had to take a day off work I was so tired and exhausted. I felt physically sick. Then even a couple weeks after that when trying to lift I could tell I can over do it quickly. It's fucking miserable recovering from that effort.

I wanted to do races like Tahoe Rim to Rim just to run in these incredible places. But when you look at traveling to these races and the cost associated with it and look at having a vacation paired with the race, no way you are going to enjoy a week out in Tahoe hiking after a race. My ass would be on the couch for days after.

I would rather just go to these places and run 6-20 miles a day and it be so laid back and chill I actually enjoy more than one run.

Racing is fun and I like pushing myself like that, but it doesn't need to be all the time and you don't need that belt buckle or medal to prove to others you do certain distances or ran certain places. <--- this is hard for me. Coming from road racing, which IMO is more stuck up, it's all about what your time was and what medals are in your collection. If your time wasn't X or better, it doesn't really count. If you don't have the medal, it doesn't count. I want to leave that thinking behind.

I want to run purely for fun this year, but I do also want to improve on my performance too (because that's fun). I have been unable to find any intermediate/advanced ultra program out there thats free ($100-$175 a program usually). I'd love to have a coach I just can't piss away that kind of money. It's just too expensive. The CTS membership was at least cheap to have access to programs. I don't know of a lot of ultra runners that have used it since CTS is primarily a cycling and tri coaching site.

That makes sense. A goal of mine in 2021 is to improve my lower mobility and this should help a lot.

Basically if the discomfort comes back after 2 weeks to come back in... it took about a month to start getting discomfort again.

But have they offered some sort of explanation for the pain and a potential cause?

They did say it might be some sort of bursitis, that was just throwing an idea out there. I never went to see a doctor before going to therapy I just decided to go straight to therapy because I figured a doctor would suggest therapy anyways.

Ok before I get to the hip...

Your Squat. You do need to go deeper. That isn't a hip thing. For your knee health and also so you don't get roasted in forums like this...

For the hip - Sounds like what I had. The pain I had was directly at the hip joint. Very pinchy and so much pressure. It only bothered me when squatting and only at depth. It was diagnosed as a Femoroacetabular Impingement. In short, the femor meets your hip socket at the joint. My Femoral head was too big, so at the bottom of the squat (where I felt the pain the most) the bones were colliding instead of functioning as a proper socket. In part this also caused a slight tear of my labrum.

I did about 4 weeks of PT with a lot of mobility work, massage therapy, and dry needling but none of it helped so I eventually had surgery where they went in and shaved down my femur so it would no longer knock into the socket and they also repaired the labrum. It was an easy surgery. Maybe 2 hours. I was in a hip brace and on a single crutch for 2 weeks. I was literally back in the gym less than 24hours later on a stationary bike and within 3months I was squatting parallel again. This was less than 2 years ago. Yesterday I squatted 400lbs to depth so I'd say it was well worth the surgery, recovery, and comeback.

This is good info and possibly sounds what I might be dealing with. Do you know of any causes for this type of injury? I’ll definitely look into this and probably go get it checked out. I’m too young (26) for this shit lol

    I'm only 32 lol

It's a fairly common injury in strength sports and often in football or hockey players, especially lineman. Any sport where you spend an excessive amount of time crouched or squatted. My buddy had the same thing, he played college football. He was much worse off though as it was on both sides and he had to have surgery on each. So he recovered for one just to do it again on the other. Then he had to go back to have the first redone because it wasn't done properly. Lesson there is to make sure you get a few opinions and research the doctor to make sure you are in the right hands.

Dang that sucks, I couldn’t imagine having the same problem in both hips like that. Sweet I’ll try and consider different options and opinions. I have a feeling it’s not going to be the easiest thing to diagnose. It sucks when you can live your life with virtually no pain and then you go into a workout and hit some squats and the discomfort is back.

You don't even wanna know how ancient I am..

Exactly, a good surgeon is not going to be quick to get an appointment with..for a reason. So much information out there now, plus you can research with your insurance a lot of times.

Not really unusual for both sides to have the same issue around the same time..think of it like your truck, headlights can usually go around the same time because they both get the same amount of use. Unless (like me) you have other injuries of course, my right knee is junk. Left ain't so great either but I injured the right one quite a few times.
