The Badlands winches seem to be popular enough, I think there's a YouTube video of a guy literally lifting his T4R off the ground with one. Free is probably a good deal.

FWIW my buddy has one in his Nissan. We went up to drag his kids XJ out of a mud hole. I think he ran it way past the duty cycle, got hot and it stopped working for good and I got to ride back with 80’ of winchline in my lap. HF warranted it and he got another one that’s lasted 4-5 years with no issues. Might have just been a shitty winch from the get go.

yeah thats a 307a bolt, they are the equivalent of grade 1 bolts. very low strength. go grab some grade 8's and you'll be fine i'm sure.

Good information, guess I should be more cognizant with my craigslist buys next time lol. This should do the trick and maybe even be more secure then it was before. Thanks again! Happy New Years y’all.

It is better than no winch, and better than a come along. For free, take it and get it installed somehow. If it gets used and works once, then you are already ahead. If it keeps working beyond that, even better. Most winches have a common mounting pattern, 10x4 as I recall, so you can always swap out the winch with a different one later.

My plan right now is to eventually get a cradle mount to put in the receiver, and get a front bumper with receiver mount as well, then get wiring for both front and rear. When I don't need the winch, it sits in the garage instead of weighing down the front of my truck and putting extra wear on things like ball joints.

My thought on cheap winches are if you use them all the time there fine... its if you rely on them for that once in a blue moon oh shit situation and it doesn't work, you can end up up shits creek without a paddle as it were.

Anybody got a spare front diff for a 2nd gen laying around? Put my truck all back togethor and I’m getting a weird binding noise and it’s coming from the diff.

Has anyone been up to Stampede Pass recently? I was trying to find some off road time today and everything was closed or snowmobiling along I-90, including Stampede Pass from the north but the USFS site says its open. Will I be able to get in from the south side?

An unusually high amount of pinstriping.
You're not getting over Stampede without a snowmobile or snow-cat this time of year. A lot of times BNSF or the power company will plow it to get into Lester, but not until April-ish. The only other way in that's not Tacoma's Watershed would be Green's Pass down through the Tie-road. That's going to be socked in until mid-June or possibly early July if we have a bad spring. There is Tacoma Pass (no relation to the watershed), but that's sketchy with a built Jeep in the summer let alone the winter.

If you're looking for some places to go you could try the North Fork Snoqualmie road. The last time I was up there, there were enough potholes to make you feel like you were on the Naches Trail. Actually, the Naches might be smother. There is also the Middle Fork road, but I haven't been on it the over 10 years so I have no idea what the condition is. You should also be able to make it to the Beckler or Foss River Road out of Skykomish. You're not going to make it far, but it might be fun to play in the snow. If you feel like going south there's the 410 corridor, but like I90 there are quite a few snow parks.

Thanks so much for the detailed info! I guess I'll just have to wait until things thaw out a bit. I was thinking of heading down towards Rainier and trying out random roads, I'll report back if I found anything interesting.

Well @JDAM I'm just down the hill from you these days. I moved back to north bend from fall city.
I'm in the neighborhood just on the north east side of 436th and I90, Alpine Estates. The first right before Chinook lumber.

I went looking for a Christmas tree up there about 3 weeks ago. The road is packed snow and meant for anything with tracks, but I saw a few vehicles. I didn't bring a shovel with me, so I turned around here: 47.28545330886354, -121.32623351503574
