front end differential noise

Hey memebers!

About 3 weeks ago, I felt groining noise and can hear a little in the front while driving between 35 to 40 mph on 2wd. That kind of noise is not normal for all of tacoma. While driving 4wd, there is no noise.
So I took it down to the dealership on 12/2. They test drive and inspection everything on my truck. They told me there is problems with front end differential and two parts is on order.
So I have appointment on 12/10, took them 5 1/2 hours of repair and whatever the cost of labor - $2200! Thank god I am under warranty. Now I am happy without noise in the front end.
If your truck feel the same way, check it out and it not normal.

 

You're running stock suspension right?

What parts did they replace?

 

I have 3" coilover in the front and 2" block in the rear, same stock shocks since last year. Mechanic told me it really doesn't matter if it stock suspension or after. I don't know what is the parts is, I left the paper works at home and I am at work.

 

I would be cool if you could post which parts were replaced, a good reference for people in the future.

 

I have a lift and had the same problem. The dealer ship didn't care about the lift and replaced the front differential no prob. Love warranty

3 08885-02606 Gear Oil LX85 (1 liter each)
1 FPN 41110-35A10
1 Warp KM/DIFF

Carrier Assy, cost like $1,800. Gear Oil cost like $65. I don't know what is FPN and Warp KM/DIFF. I am new to this.

 

I've noticed a bit of a noise/slight vibration as well. I can feel it in the gas pedal too. My lift was put on back in august but it didn't start then, maybe october I started feeling it, so I don't think it had to do with the lift install. I haven't tried it in 4wd though I'll try that this afternoon.

 

And was the problem fixed? Are they using an upgraded part...if not the problem should just repeat itself.

That's what I don't get about this vibe - new front diff fix. Its nothing, i've had it for 25k miles and just used 4*4 for 150 miles straight this weekend and the truck was awesome. I think this is some BS by the dealers to scam yota out of cash because they can. The vibe in my truck is worse in the winter than summer, comes and goes and goes away in 4*4. Then you switch back and it might be gone for 100 miles then come back...

So is it just a vibe? I don't hear or feel anything grinding but was a little worried about it since it didn't do it the first year+ I owned the truck.

 

I just can feel it on my left foot rest by the e brake. It just make groining, moaning feels. Sometime I cannot hear the noise but can feel it when you stay on 35 to 45 mph. Not shaking vibe, just groining vibe.

 

I got the same issue. (This topic has been beat to death too) It seems like almost every tacoma that's lifted 3 inches gets this. Poeple are working on a cheaper fix for people out of Warranty

This issue is so confusing because people lift their trucks and immediatley get the problem, they get new differentials and the problem goes away.

Note: My brother has a 2005 AC with a 2.5" lift and AAL in the rear with Rancho's.. Nothing.. NO growling.. NO Vibs..

 

is it like the surging or pulsing feeling vibe from about 30-45mph? if so, i have this too. it has gotten worse since it has gotten cold. i have an 06, so my 3 year/36 months is up. but it this in the powertrain warranty? isn't it like 6 years bumper to bumper or something? if so, and i can get it done for free, i need to. anyone know if i'm eligible?

 

That is what it felt like. During spring and summer, I don't feel anything. I felt that kind of vibe during falls when it cold outside. Starting last month it was really cold and snow, I felt this vibe.
I am not sure if it powertrain but I believe so. Call your dealership and find out.

I found a good Toyota dealer out east in Nova Scotia (Amherst Toyota) that replaced my front diff under warranty.

 

It's covered under the powertrain warranty which is 5 yrs / 60,000 miles (whichever comes first, as usual).

 

well i need to go asap then. i'm going to the dealership tomorrow to see what can be done.

went to the local toyota today. went to the service department and asked who i needed to talk to about some vibes i was getting. the guy i asked said that he would. i described everything and he wrote it down. he was a nice older man. then i pulled my truck in and he gave me a buzzer thing to have in the waiting room. not even 10 minutes later, it went off. i thought it was funny that it was so quick, i just thought maybe they figured it out quick. so i go out and see another guy, he had apparently drove it. he looked like he had a brick shoved up his ass longways. he says "so what is it that's wrong with your truck?" in a smartass tone. i was kind of confused because i'm positive that i told the guy before and they wrote it down. i said "i'm getting surging vibrations from about 30-45mph." he's like "well there ain't anything wrong with it, i just drove it and it's fine." me, "no, it has been vibrating between those speeds for about 2 weeks. it doesn't before 30 and not after 45." he says, "well it's them big mudder tires." i think to myself, really? i don't think many people consider a 265/75 goodyear duratrac as a "mudder tire". so i reply, "no, it's not the tires, i've had them on for almost 16,000 miles and it has never did this. it has just started in the past 2 weeks. i actually just went to my tire and wheel guy for him to drive it to see if that was the problem. he said that they did not need a rotation/balance and that my alignment was good too." he says once again, "it's them tires. i couldn't even feel the road because of their tread. it vibrated the whole time." at this point i was getting angry, because he said at first that he felt nothing and it drove fine. now he says that it drove like crap and that it did vibrate. i was so pissed off, i just stared at him for about 30 seconds and then asked where my keys were and left.

i don't think i will ever go back there again. is there a way to complain or something on the toyota site? i was not out to jip them out of money or a new differential. i was there to confirm what the problem was. whether it would be a simple fix or a whole new differential, i wanted to know what it was and how to fix it. instead, some smartass guy that just test drives cars all day wanted to give me a hard time. i guess he figured he could take advantage of the situation because i am young, 19. so he blames ME and my TIRES. when it is toyota's fault that this crap is going wrong. it's obviously not the tires, alignment is in spec and rotation and balance are not needed. they never caused anything like this in the previous 16,000 miles they have been on. he just didn't want to take the initiative and toyota's responsibility to make things right. i don't really know how to fight this back, that's why i just had to leave. this should be under my warranty, but i have to have them to confirm that there is a problem. i guess that's why he took the easy way out by saying there's no problem, because he figured that i didn't know what to do next. so what do i do next? heck, i couldn't even get this fixed if it was out of warranty and i had to pay out of pocket, because he won't even admit there's a problem. i have no idea what to do.

 

Sorry to hear that man! But I feel your pain, I have the same vibe/shudder at about 45-50mph. And havent gone to toyota bc Im at 63k miles and I dont think my Extended Powertrain warrenty covers it.
But Ive heard that there is a TSB for the Trany mount or something, maybe try looking it up, printing it, then going back there to see If they will do the work.

 

Have you tryed shims or CB drop, since your lifted?
