So, my warranty is up. Toyota Care + is over. Am pushing 50k miles.

On my last service, the stealership provided a report of service items needed soon, and their price was not cheap.

So, I call up a mechanic, who I've known since middle school and runs his own shop... to see if he would be interested in taking over the maintenance on my Tacoma.

He starts telling me about BG Products, how great they are, and that it's what he recommends. Said he was surprised Toyota wasn't pushing it on me already.

It's the Christmas/ News Years week, so we don't schedule anything yet, and I told him I would look into them and call him back after the first. He didn't give me any prices.

I break out the papers that Toyota printed, and sure enough, several of the items were BG services.

Google is my friend... so I look them up, and all sounds good to me, ... except I can't find pricing anywhere.

    Which brings me here....

Who has used BG product services from other than at dealership.

How expensive was it compared to dealership cost?

You could do a 50k service yourself between breakfast and lunch with $50 worth of tools.

Which services are these specifically? I'm always skeptical of the miracles in a can type things. Seems like mechanics might push them because they're low hours and high profit - not because they're necessarily very effective for your vehicle.

Do you know which BG products specifically they were recommending? BG offers a ton of different products from fuel and oil additive to "44k" egr cleaners and flush "aides".

Sorry man, That wasn't directed at you. You seem to have posted while I was typing a response to the first reply. You know.... the guy who is so brilliant that he couldn't understand that when someone contacts a mechanic about doing maintenance, it's usually because they don't want to do it themselves.

I've been on TW a long time, and know to expect the dumbass replies. I was genuinely surprised at how fast that first one showed up.

BG...Transmission Fluid Service, Power Steering Fluid Service, Complete Fuel System Service
NOT listed as BG but recommended...Throttle Body, 4WD Service, Brake Fluid, Cooling System Sevice

I agree, most of that snake oil for cars is just that. Totally crap.

I do, however, agree that regular fluid replacements are necessary to prolong the life of said systems. An occassional flush???? I wouldn't expect one to FIX an issue, but may help to PREVENT one.

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
AFAIK BG products are fine. When they are needed.

The independent I've used upon occasion for over 20 years uses them. When they are needed.

As far as comparing cost of dealer to independent, you'll have to figure that out for yourself by asking your boy to line up quotes against what the dealer offered. But I will say that typically an indy around here will run 60-75% of dealer on hourly labor. Hours charged are usually by the same flat rate method, not a time spent method.

If an OE part is required, cost is about the same. If an aftermarket part will suffice, then cost will be lower.

Back to your Q. BG is a supplier of aftermarket elixirs. Indy vs dealer cost for the product will likely be about the same, but the service less because the hourly rate is less.

However, at 50k I can't think of anything that BG, or any other elixer product is needed for. 'Maybe' a bottle in the gas for injector and top end clean up?

But if you pump your own gas (IE don't live in Oregon) you can DIY with Techtron or RedLine injector cleaner.

Yes, your fluids should be serviced regularly based on use of the truck, age, mileage, etc. But that doesn't mean anything beyond fresh fluids of the proper choice are needed.

Just be aware that shops love BG additives as there is a big markup on them. I'm with a previous poster and would go with what Toyota recommends. I would also take a Saturday and do the service myself, but that's just me, many don't feel comfortable or have the time to do it themselves. If you do decide to do the service yourself, make sure to keep your receipts and maintain a log of exactly what was done and when. You can even add it into the electronic Toyota Service Record to show that if you decide to sell it later that the work was completed.

How does one add personally done maintenance to the Toyota Service Record?

I have my service advisor put it in, I get both my Tacoma and my wife's Lexus serviced at the same dealership, some things are done at the dealership, and some I do myself. Any service done outside of the Toyota dealer network can be put into the database and will show up on the maintenance log. This may not be too big of an issue for many in general, however, if you are ever going to sell the vehicle, it is a trusted source for a potential buyer to feel assured that the maintenance was completed. I also keep a personal log, where I keep my receipts as well.

No problem, I record for my Tacoma, Highlander and Land cruiser on there. Makes it all very easy to keep track of.

A retort like that is not going to help you get additional sincere responses. If you've been around here long enough, you should know how some folks can be and you should have built up a bit thicker skin.

What about my post requires thick skin? He asked about rebuild in a can products and complained about expense of basic maintenance - on an enthusiast forum.

Suggesting a cheap DIY route is a dickhead comment?

Maybe someone will put “not being a sensitive little girl” in a spray bottle for OP to buy.

This forum is full of helpless man children.
