What's your 6MT Engine Oil Temp while Towing and under normal driving conditions?

I recently added the engine oil temp PID to my OBD Fusion dashboard. I drove up a local mountain pass on a cold night and my oil temp reading was 255+. I wasn't towing, had no load and am driving a 2019 Pro with 6MT manual trans with 10K miles. I've never seen an oil temp that high since my 1979 Volkswagen Westfalia running on 3 cylinders over the same mountain pass. Any idea if the reading is accurate? I can't imagine what it would be if I was towing a loaded trailer over a pass in Arizona in the middle of the summer... If it's accurate, I'd think this truck needs an additional engine oil cooler to be safe.

 

My usually tracks pretty close to coolant temp. I've never seen a temp that high.

Are u sure it's engine oil temp? Kinda sounds like torque converter temp.

The screenshot I shared shows that it is Engine Oil Temp. I'll triple check today on my next drive.

 

I've also used OBD Fusion to monitor vitals, but with the Toyota PID pack.
I'm with the other guy, oil temp pretty much tracks coolant temp after warmup (it'll come up faster from cold, obviously).
I don't recall what the max value was under load though TBH.

 

Hate to ask, but does your TRD Pro have the tow package with oil cooler for the engine? I would think it would be standrard on something like the Pro.

That's not too hot for oil. If your oil was the same temp as the coolant, you'd have a very sludgy engine oil.

 

I just hit 280 on a test run. In my opinion, this us much too hot for a low grade climb on a 38 degree day with no weight in the bed and while not towing. This vehicle also has the towing package with the extra oil cooler.

The oil temp is caused by cylinder temp. Above the piston is over 500*F. 280* is not crazy hot for engine oil, but does seem high. I believe 305* is getting close to Thermal breakdown for the Synthetic Engine oil.
I'd think the sensor is feeding a false temp.

 

As long as your oil is at least a synthetic blend, you’re ok. Mobil one full synthetic is good for approximately 450 degrees. Almost all diesels and any gas engine that comes from factory w/synthetic (blend or full) is designed to run high oil temps. The thinking is that by running oil temp high keeps condensation out, which is thought to be enemy #1 w/modern clean burning engines (modern = any engine using an injection system)

 

I've owned many cars, trucks and sportscars in my life. My last high performance car almost always stayed below 240, even on an afternoon of hard cornering and long straightaways. Most of the time the oil temp stayed below 220-230 and on a track day you might may see 250 briefly. With Mobil 1 full synthetic, the techs never wanted to see the car anywhere close to 280. I'm wondering if other manual Tacoma owners are seeing engine oil temps above 250 on a cold day on mountain climbs? What does your oil temp look like while towing on a hot day?

 

I'm not worried about the oil as much as I am the engine internals/bearings.

 

Time to verify if the info is good. Another form of measurement is required... have access to an infrared temperature gun?

 

I was thinking the same. I was wondering if I can add an addition sensor on the coupling of where you might install a traditional external oil cooler ....right off of the oil filter. Where might you shoot the oil to get an accurate reading? I don't think the pan is going to provide an accurate enough reading.
