Want to buy an SR5, access cab, long bed, 4x4.
What would you have done differently if you could do over buying your truck?
I'm not a technology package guy so none of that interests me.
This will be my daily driver with some monthly excursions on forest service/fire roads and some mild wheeling out in the boonies...no Moab or boulder crawling type stuff for me so lifts aren't of much need/interests.
I'm retired and live out in Bumfuk Kansas a little south of nowhere so all gravel and backroads.
Often drive out to Colorado, Arkansas and northern NM to camp - that's where the forest service/fire roads part comes in.
I'm comfortable in life and good with spending money on what I want with this truck so go ahead and toss out ideas even if they might be more $$$.
OEM or after-market...it's all of interest to me.
Anyway, I'd appreciate any insight, experience and knowledge you folks might have regarding this.
Thanks for your time and trouble.

I would have gotten a Double Cab.
The Access Cab is nothing more than extra storage.
Not at all a comfortable ride for anyone having to ride back there.
The 2 full size doors on the Double Cab make things a lot easier to get in and out.

    Welcome to TW!

My best advice would be to test drive test drive test drive.

I wouldn’t do anything differently for mine other than have got one without Nav to save on original cost. I hardly use it now that I use a RAM mount on the A-pillar.

Lots of good threads and people floating around here.

I also dream of a double cab long bed just for the sake of having more space, but I'm pretty happy with my access cab. That said i rarely have more than 1 other person in the truck, and when I do the people in the back don't mind because I'm paying for the gas lol. I like the sport that I have because I don't really do any offloading, and suspension is a bit stiffer which makes it handle nicely in corners.
I also regret not getting into a manual, but that said my 2006 auto is pretty solid. If you're into manual transmissions, I belive you can get them in a sport access cab.

So far there's several 'go with the 4 doors' and you know that's probably been my biggest question.
Kids & grandkids are grown and all over the place so it's almost exclusively me and Tucker - the big brown dog - and so the backseat of the access is OK with him as we already tried one.
But I do understand your desire now for the 4 door and it's exactly the type of answers I need - thanks fellas, keep them coming.

I would have purchased the truck with a color matched LEER camper shell

I wouldn’t wait to get the accessories or additions to the truck that you want. If you can afford it, get them sooner so you have more time to enjoy them. Also rarely have more than 1 passenger so I’m fine with my AC. I like the idea of SR5. I think a lot of people buy a TRD trim and promptly swap out suspension, tires, and wheels. If you don’t want any of that or tech stuff SR5 sounds perfect.

I love my OEM bed mat, center console and glove box organizers from Amazon, and seat covers to keep original fabric nice and clean

I lived in Colorado for a couple of decades, 70’s and 80’s, drove many a mile on dirt roads, kinda miss that.

If you want peppiness, get the V6. I have the double cab short bed SR with 4 cyl. I'm getting about 17 MPG around town back and forth to work but I do have the upgraded wheel and tire package from the distributor with 17 inch tires and 265/65R17 tires.

I am not sure peppiness describes the V6 either. I love my truck and I bought it for off roading and it does great.....but peppy, it is not.

if you can get a double cab long bed, I'd get that. Personally, I like the long bed enough to get the access cab if you can't find a double cab with it. The short bed is really just a bed for looks and not for work. Also, I like camping out of the back of mine and so the short bed just wouldn't work for that either. My main suggestion would be to look at the SR model instead of the SR5. These base trucks aren't really much different other than some small things that most people either change (wheels & fog lights) or are easy and cheap to mod (intermittent wiper). Save your money and get an SR with the convenience package (painted bumpers, rear seats, h-key, digital dash).

My most recommended mods are LED fog lights (caliraised), softopper, and remote start.
