I have not been on my game lately. Don’t even really feel like me. Skipping gym days, I’m hating getting up in the morning and slogging away on the TM because of the bad weather, eating like shit, drinking every night, not hydrating well.

I feel blah, joints hurt, muscles hurt, head fog. Have my routine blood tests this week and prolly gonna get some shit from my doc on a couple numbers.

    I’m

    D
    O
    N
    E

Doing keto for the remainder of January, adhering to 18:6 as a minimum fasting schedule. Maybe I’ll find myself again.

I need to get it together guys.

Anyone else just not feeling the workouts the past month?

I think I lifted 14 or 15 days in all of December. Went 20 days between doing the same workout (20 days between legs, 20 days between deadlift days, etc).

Whenever I get like this, ie this past fall, I always go back to what an instructor told me in academy. “Unfuck yourself.”

Not bashing, just asking - are you going to go keto longer than January? What’s the point of doing it for 3 weeks? If the goal is weight loss, you’re just going to gain that weight back the next
month. And I’m not a keto hater. I had incredible (weight loss) success on it years back. And, keto and IF? That’s doesn’t seem like a recipe to get you back on track, more like punishing yourself. I know it works for Joe Rogan, but you’re setting yourself up for failure. If you can’t adhere to a basic diet, why do you think you can adhere to an extreme diet? Sounds like you know what you need to do, and a drastic change to an extreme diet ain’t it. It’s ok to skip a few days, eat like shit, whatever. Get back to what you know you need to do the next day. Take it one day at a time. Consistency is the key. You know this. Don’t be so hard on yourself.

I may do it longer, think I'm just going to go for 4 weeks and see how it goes. I expect it to act as a reset.

I don't see keto as extreme. All you do is eat less than 30g of carbs a day. I follow Ketogains so my protein levels stay up higher than the standard keto diet.

I have experience with keto and actually enjoy it, and I don't view it as extreme or restrictive. I miss rice here and there and I'll miss my beer but I need to knock that off anyways to drop some weight.

I also have been doing 16:8 fasting for the last year and a half ish. So I'm only adding about 2 hours to my daily fasting window.

I previously did keto for several months in 2019-2020. Loved it. Felt the best I ever have in a long time. Would like to get back to that.

Also I have an autoimmune disease in which certain foods for me are a major trigger for symptoms. Carbs are pro inflammatory so when I cut them out it really helps my gut health and makes me feel better. I can tell my poor food choices lately are starting to cause some issues. Perfuse joint pain being one of them.

And you don't rebound weight loss from keto when you go off it. Not when your caloric intake is controlled. I still follow CICO on keto.

BTW you do realize you just asked an ultra runner "Why so extreme bro?"

Because then it's not fun, that's why :)

Living in the PNW we all go through this every year. It's the weather. And the dark. And the doldrums of Jan-March. I have a Sun lamp on as I type this. Struggled to get out of bed as well. Really unlike me. And the amount of cake, ice cream, and cookies I've consumed is stupid.Try to go easy on yourself. Sounds like you'll turn it around. People that do all the shit all of us do aren't quitters. Couple of things I try to remember when I get in that type of rut:

Try to make it fun again. Or at least engaging. Add something new? Engage your mind a bit. Check out Wim Hoff breathing. Working my way up in breath holds. It's really interesting and challenging.

Realize this is a bump in the road. You're not reverting to a fat slob in 30 days. Your inner badass is still very much alive and ready to go.

Never under estimate the power of a good brisk walk. I had to skip some training yesterday morning due to parenting stuff so last night I headed out for a 6 miler. 700 feet of elevation gain at an average speed of 4 miles an hour. Took 90 minutes. Burned 8-900 calories and most importantly I got outside. Felt sooooo much better.

Lastly, while you're getting back on track give yourself some grace. You're not a robot and we all have our ups and downs. That being said.....go fucking kill it!

I just don't like them. They don't fit in my ears well. It's an added effort and hassle to link them to my phone every time I go to use them. Now it's one more thing I have to remember to charge. And because the wire goes around my head it's hard to reach the controls without pulling it out of my ear. The things that go into your ear to hold them in are also uncomfortable.
Cordless ones would be worse because now I have to pull my phone out of my flip belt, take off my gloves to be able to touch the screen and that just adds more crap to screw around with on a run.

I'm sure they would be great for lifting but when I'm running they just don't workout well. I like the iPhone headphones that have the controls that come down around my neck and are easier to grab and control when I'm moving. They also fit perfectly, don't fall out, and have decent audio. I just wish they were more weather proof.

It's been going on closer to 90 days. This hasn't been a holidays thing, it's been since my race thing. I've gained a significant amount of weight.
But that's what happens when you go from running 60-70mpw and lifting 3-4 days a week and go to... nothing but still eat the same :)

I just need to put a conscious effort into getting back on track. And I prefer to do it not being easy on myself and just making no excuses and doing it. Discipline is a habit, just rebuild the habit. Wait for motivation to fall from the sky and you'll be a lazy fuck the rest of your life.

Being easy on myself is what I have been doing, and it's resulted into skipped workouts "because I don't feel it today yooooo".

There is no more I don't feel like it today, it's fucking go to the gym, do your shit, and don't complain and don't come home and eat like a pig.

What's odd is I normally do not care, I love to run outside in the cold (I have high quality cold weather gear). This year it's just been hard and IDK why. I may need to switch my routine to lift in the AM and run in the PM until it warms up in a couple months.

This coming weekend I'm going to head back out in the woods again and I bet it's going to be epic and I'll find myself there. Especially because I will be returning to the race course (the blair witch nightmares have stopped). Pretty sure I left my soul somewhere near the steep rocky path on trail 5. I will go back and I will reclaim it, and I will find it more easily with my new Black Diamond ultra light trekking poles. :)

Sounds like you've got a good grasp on what you need to do for your body, headspace, and spirit. This is why I go up to the mountains as much as possible. It's where I lose my mind and find my soul. And yes....I stole that from John Muir. I'm also able to get it back a bit on longer endurance workouts like long swims, runs, and rides. I wish you the best man, sounds like it's been a struggle. Time to get to work as well eh?

Nice poles BTW. Blk. Diamond makes good shit. I recently traded in my old ones for some Lekis. Take care.

I am not sure I track or agree with the reasoning or facts stated, but if it gets you in the right place physically and mentally, I guess that's all that matters. I just hope whatever you decide to do gets you out of the rut!

I can agree with you that beer, especially craft beer, is the worst thing that can happen when on a diet. Multiple DIPAs almost always leads to poor food choices. So I compound the misstep.

I agree with that. I've been stuck inside or running circles around the park by my house. I've not been on a trail in awhile and need to get back out there.

Every time I pick those poles up I feel like they are filled with helium. They are so nice. I hope they serve me well.

I've been working on making some furniture lately and whenever I'm in my shop and I'm done using dangerous equipment I have 1-2 beers. When I work in my shop 2-4 times a month not a big deal. When it's turned into every night... damn, hard habit to break. Then as you said the poor food choices come in.

Don't let that broken ankle turn you into me!

Although beer has Thiamine in it which is good for bones

My diet has been absolute shit since I broke the ankle on the 26th, and for most of December in all honesty. Stress triggers poor eating and drinking choices for me, and I have a lot going on at work. Makes me want to binge like a MFer. I'm starting with cleaning it up today, though. Not going keto but really focusing on cutting out bread and sugars.

Follow up appointment is tomorrow to determine if I will need surgery. I haven't been lifting since I was injured but I will ask about upper body stuff tomorrow assuming I don't need surgery.

Motivation is for amateurs. Habit is where long term success lives. Also, if you are really fucked, fix one thing at a time rather than everything at once...it makes it easier. This week focus on workouts, next week focus on keto, week after IF....
