I haven't cleaned my Gen 2, but on my Gen 1 the MAF sensor is installed with JIS crosshead screws, not Phillips. They're not exactly interchangeable. Using Phillips on JIS can strip the screw head, or at least damage it.

A JIS screw can often be identified by a small dot on the head.

Here are some pix of what it looks like on my Gen 1 truck, showing the damage that started before I realized the screws were JIS and went after my Vessel drivers. The screws came out perfectly with the right driver. Worth checking on my Gen 2 to see what type is used on that generation.

    They are JIS
I must have 30 screw drivers, kept trying them till one fit tight
Guess its time to go buy a set of JIS

You won't regret it. JIS works on Phillips screws better than a Phillips driver, plus JIS. I use my Vessel Megadoras more than my Snap-on screwdrivers.

Question, looking on Amazon I can buy MAF cleaner for about $14 or an entire new MAF sensor for $20. I have 175,000 on my 09, would it be better to just buy the $20 new sensor or try cleaning the old original one?

Why not just go to Walmart and buy a can for $4?

OK, I'll reword my question: is cleaning as effective as buying a new one? And are the new 'generic' ones reliable or not?

You should buy OEM not generic if you just want to replace it.
Generic and OEM can have differences that may or may not cause problems. So why chance it.

It would be my recommendation to use an appropriate and dedicated MAF cleaner to clean your MAF. The last thing you need is to have it leave some residue on it that you can't get off, particularly for those two wires further in.

Try what I did. Clean it with soap and water, put it back in, take it back out because it doesn't work anymore, buy a new one.

4 years late, but, I had the same question myself  So I did some digging and I believe I have found the part for the O-Ring only for the MAF Sensor:
    Toyota Part 90099-14141

confirmed I purchased the o ring at the link referenced in that post, and installed it when I cleaned my MAF a couple nights ago. Perfect direct OEM replacement! The old ring was still fine but I forgot to take it off before spraying that thang down heavily with the MAF Sensor cleaner, soo... New ring it is :) Totally worth it!
