I bet this is a good group to ask this question to.

I've used grease guns at work for years but just bought one this year to grease my boat trailer bearings with. Never loaded a grease gun before. One type of grease I used loaded fine and worked fine but im finding that the grease is breaking down quickly so I was going to try a new grease. This time I just got Lucas oil red and tacky #2 and I'm having weird issues with the gun. I load the grease and try to prime it but I get no pressure and the follower handle will move freely all the way to the gun end of the grease canister and at no point can I get grease to flow. Is this normal? Have I A) bought the wrong grease cartridge for my grease gun? B) broken my grease gun? or do I C) need to fix my priming/removing air procedure for the gun to work properly?

    Thanks in advance guys.

Sometimes I have trouble getting new grease to flow and have to turn the head to bleed the air out, doesn't take much and it's also easy to make a mess with the grease under pressure.

Some grease guns have a little valve I assume is a primer you push in to let the air out as well.

Yeah I read to try that online, I thought the bleeder on top of the pump head would serve that purpose but ill try a half turn of the canister and see if I can get it going. Sounds more like human error than broken pump or wrong cartridge to you though?

I don't think you have the wrong grease, it's just thicker than normal stuff

Those bleeders are useless. Back it out a couple turns and keep squeezing the trigger till you get flow, then tighten back up. Don't unscrew it too far, or you'll have a mess on your hands and grease everywhere. Not that I've done such a thing... :spy:

I’ve personally never had good luck with the bleeder button, I always loosen the fitting on the end of the hose to release air during the first few pumps. Red & Tacky is all I use, it’s good stuff!

You are using grease made for your bearings being in water ? How often do you float your boat??

Many different kinds out there find what is easier for you I buy from McMaster- Carr most often a bunch of different things

Most greases will tend to just wash out .

Sometimes Getting air out can be a pain I played with my grease guns many times .

The good old days putting grease in by hand out of a 5 gallon pail I don`t miss at all.

Basic instructions. Pull plunger back and lock it. Unscrew tube from top/pump assembly. Remove old tube. New grease cartridge should have a plastic cap end and metal pull top. Place plastic cap end with cap removed into tube. Remove metal pull tab and the reattach screw it onto the top pump. Pump until you get the new red and tacky flowing. Sorry if it comes off as a no brainer but I've seen them done improperly before :anonymous:edit to add after screwing it back together then release the plunger. See how easy it is to forget something

I don't get lubrication PM's often but we still purchase it in the 5 gallon buckets for certain applications. I guess it's cheaper to certify a portion of 5 gallon bucket rather than waste 4 cartridges out of 12 for certification. Even with the bucket pump it's easier to put a disposable glove on and start packing lol messy

Ooof, that's like packing the old wheel bearings. Even at only 31 I know how to pack them by hand. I had to show some of the younger (and older...) guys at work how to pack bearings. We have one of those packers, but I don't like it at all. Guess I'm too old school for my own good...
