Seat Bolts/Threads Stripped! How to?

Hey guys,

Took my tacoma to get detailed and they needed to remove the seats to clean all the carpeting.

Interiors all clean now, but one issue is I noticed my passenger seat front mounting bolts were loose (The washer was loose), and that one bolt even looked slightly crooked! I went ahead and removed them for a proper install and could not put them back in! (didn't want to force it ofcourse)

I removed one of the rear bolts to see if it would work but it could not correctly screw in the front mounts :-/ The bolts do look a bit stripped, they are also are odd looking, with a smaller thread tip which gets larger 1/4" in up. It seems to looked stripped right at the transition of diameter.

So damn detailers stripped my mounts! Anyone know the proper tap to use to fix? Ideas?

Its probably an M10 1.25 pitch bolt, but I am not completely sure without checking with a gauge.. I would get new bolts, and run a thread chaiser through the floor to clean the threads up. From the way you decribed it, its probably savable

What size are the bolts? You just need the corresponding tap, should work like a charm. Remember to run it in a full turn, then back out, then two turns, then back out- it allows all of the metal shavings to work their way out as you go as opposed to just twisting the tap all the way in. You can get a set for a decent price at Autozone, or you should be able to just rent it for them at the same price.

Yeah I went back a second time the day after it happened because I was concerned of the little amount of moisture still present under the carpets and they dried what they could (looked like they just shoved towels under the carpets and used a heat gun?. Yeah gonna charge it back....

Ive left the truck venting and its very dry, carpet is 100% dry, insulation is 90% and slight moisture between plastic film of carpet and metal. But honetsly im still unconfortable for how it is under, so I think I'll definitely remove it all and tidy up myself, thanks for the advice.

Will get to order new bolts too, hopefully not expensive.

I have a 2009 tacoma. The exact same thing just happened to me. Anyone able to give me a link of what thread kit I need to buy. And if possible tell me where I can buy new bolts. ..

 

Take it back to the detailer and talk to the owner about paying the dealer to fix it. That's a safety issue.

This is something that should never happen at a professional detailer. Its called a detail shop for a reason

 

So the bolts strip (the threads) when removed? That's kinda strange. Are they thread locked in? Maybe need to heat them prior to removal. In my Porsche the seat bolt heads would strip and you have to use a hammer and cold chisel to get them out, but he thread were fine. Then would replace them with a higher quality bolt.

I've already been wanting to replace the bolts in my Tacoma with something nicer. So this is good info to know.

 

I just finished the process of removing and installing my seatsfor a project. I didn't notice any threadlock, but the bolts definitely required more torque to remove than a bolt that size should... they all released with a sharp "POP". I'm actually surprised I didn't have mangled threads.

What I did notice was that each bolt had a strange whitish corrosion on the head and washer. I would bet money that there is a galvanic corrosion issue (dissimilar metals affecting each other) that is causing the problem.
