Maybe with a taller bottle jack for sure, I usually use the receiver hitch and then use a bungee or a ratchet strap to help secure the Hi Lift from jumping about and trying to kick my ass...

That boot being twisted may be a by-product of the hose clamp randomly hitting during certain points in articulation. I had the same issue, ended up using a thinner clamp with a smaller profile screw portion.

Hmmmm good to know, got a link to the clamps? I can't stand the OEM style so I have been using these for a while, but if there are better ones out there I am down to check em out.

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/CV-Axle-Bo...-95-2015-Set-of-8-Clamps-4x4-SR5/201270522338

It also doesn't help that the boot slide mod moves the clamp further down the shaft.

They were nothing special, just parts store hose clamps with a thinner band and smaller diameter screw portion.

You were absolutely right BTW. There is a nice gouge in the coil from the boot clamp. I haven't fixed it yet but you were right. :p

I was able to start the rack project back up over Christmas vacation.

Been working on remaking the base for my bed rack since it was originally made for a second gen tacoma. Profile is much cleaner now, and the way it is designed it will keep the bed more square and likely strengthen it.

    Best weld so far:

    Not great ones:

[IMG]Untitled by Michael Halat, on Flickr

The biggest purpose is to create a better side profile since the second gens have a taper that the first gens do not.

Some good conversations with @6 gearT444E and @planters15 have me rethinking a fast back style support that goes to the end of the bed. a notched straight tube would be easiest, but something with a little bit of a bend might be nicer.

I'll likely add that later though, current priority is finish welding the rack, cut out the center bars for what I am thinking about for my rack/dual sport project, and welding that all up. Then likely paint it in the spring when it's warmer out.

Would that fast back support be cosmetic or would it serve another purpose? Either way I'm all for it. I agree that a little bend would look great, like 15-20 degrees.

Likely cosmetic. The plan is to get more 1/8" metal and cut it to follow the curve of the back of the bed. Weld it to where the angle iron ends, then fish plate the joint with some 3/16" that also curves the back. I'd like the tube to land right in the curve if I can. While there will be decently thick steel plating at that point to weld to, it's not super strong either way so it's more cosmetic than strength.

@6 gearT444E is closer but probably doesn't have dies for 1.5" tube either :p

I just got a notcher a couple of days ago and have been hand notching until now. I don't know why I wasted my time, this is so much easier.

Only reason I didn't was because I don't do as much tube work as I use to but it's one of those things I've always wanted. Excited to try it out on whatever my next project might be haha. Def makes it cleaner and easier, let alone saving time.
