SAE Y04 stamped into the base of the lower reflector. All ECE marks molded into the backside of the lens.

 

Some of the best light's I've ever had were Hella 500FFs with 55w HIDs swapped in them. You want to talk about a freaking power cheap light. Wow.

So if you get bored of your 100w halogens, try some HIDs.

i don’t think the warm up time of HID’s will make them good for road use, but I am considering it. I just changed jobs, my new schedule has me working a month of days and a month of nights so depending on how much I get to use the fun lights it might work out.

Speaking of, I’ve been able to get on some relatively level dark straight roads on my new commute that really show the distance throw of the Hellas. It’s closer to a 1/2 mile in ultimate reach with good light out to 1/4 mile. It’ll be interesting to see how the Osram super brights do.

 

The warm up time becomes a non issues after the are well...warmed up. So about 3-8 seconds on first go. After that, they retain their heat so if you have to turn them off for oncoming, then back on, the warm up time is like .5 second and drop in intensity is very low. I used to do it all the time no issues.

 

Hot restarts on HIDs are not recommended. You are supposed to leave adequate cool down time before reigniting the capsule otherwise it will significantly shorten the life of the HID components. I'm sure the amount of time for adequate cool down will vary by brand/model.

But never had any issues myself and HID bulbs are cheap enough anyways. They would outlast a halogen bulb either way.

 

I assume there is no way to shove a 9005 bulb into an H9 assembly?
Are there any aftermarket driving lights built to house a 9005 bulb? Which could then be supercharged with HIR?

 

9005s won’t fit in an H9 assembly. The H3 is pretty common in many driving lamps with its compact size, a 100w H3 has about the same output as a 9011, granted the 9011 does it with lower current draw and likely better focus.

These 100w HIR 6" Spots always looked interesting, could easily redo the mount for a permanet vehicle mount. I believe they are intended for .50 cal gun lights for the military. (Obviously not SAE compliant)

 

Apologies for the potentially noob question, I've wandered here from your excellent 3rd gen thread on lighting. It looks like most of the testing thus far has been with aftermarket housings and reflectors. Is that simply because the stock headlight housings high beam reflector is inadequate, or just that a larger reflector will give better performance? Do you have a recommendation on a bulb swap in a stock housing?

 

This thread addresses independent add-on lighting modules, which is why bulb swaps for stock housings are not discussed.

No worries. And I think it's been said elsewhere that the stock H9 halogen bulb is about the brightest unit that fits in the stock high beam. So you're already good to go.

As Ardrummer292 pointed out, this is the "auxiliary" thread.

The 3rd gen uses H9's fir the high beam, there's not really an upgrade for that bulb, as the H9 is a high spec/high output bulb to begin with.

If you want more light when you turn your highbeams on, you need auxiliary lights. But there's a ton of different options available. Crashnburn80 started this so that anyone who is looking for (primarily) street legal options can have a resource to compare the options on the market. This is great, similarly to his aftermarket fog light thread, because most light manufacturers don't provide iso plots of their lamps beam patterns, which means that we are *In The Dark* when trying to compare multiple products.

 

So in comparison to the afore mentioned halogen lights. What's everybody's thoughts on these knockoff daylighter looking lights?

They're pretty cheap, so I don't know how they'll compare. But I'm thinking that with a 130 watt bulb or the osram 100 watt crash mentioned, maybe they'd puke out a enough light to be an option for the price point. Plus five of these would be much more affordable than five actual daylighters.

 

@crashnburn80 curious if you know if any of the SS3 Clear SAE driving lights have any SAE markings.. i was hoping they would have SAE markings like the fogs but they dont on my pair ...up here the cops are pretty particular with pod lights having sae markings but i guess my whole truck is illegal as it is....
