Okay so I was talking with my buddy yesterday and he brought to my attention that there are companies that offer re-treaded tires for half the regular price of tires. Just curious if anyone has heard of doing this and how safe these tires actually are...

It depends on how hard you intend to work the retreaded tires. Not off-roading, but extended periods of time at high speed. The speed rating of a retreaded tire is not the same as the original tire casing. Because retreaded tires are often made in small runs, there is usually no testing done to establish a new speed rating. If you drive at 85+ mph often (not unreasonable depending where you live), the retreaded tire may fail. And it can happen in normal conditions, without hitting debris or a rumble strip.

I was with my father on motorcycles, we were following a car and the tread came off the sidewall on a retread, good thing we slowed down when the tire literally started smoking... I'm not so sure on retreads, but there may be some good ones out there.

My mother in law got a rental car for travel a few weeks ago. A few miles from the rental center on a highway three of the retreaded tires came apart. Luckily she didn't lose control of the car.

I see retreads that have come apart from big trucks on the highways all the time... I'd rather spend the money and get a new tire IMO.

Buying quality tires is far cheaper than replacing the truck. It's one of those areas where you should not skimp.

What rental company runs retread tires??? Must be some fly-by-night outfit. Major rental companies buy new and sell the car off before it needs new tires.

Not sure what rental company it was. I also thought it was strange. Most rental companies only hold onto a car till 25,000ish miles right? That shouldn't require new tires in that life span.

But if it wasn't retreads it was a bad batch of tires. The tread completely separated from the sidewalls on three tires. Scary thing was she had gotten this car as a replacement. The first car she drove off with had one tire do the exact same thing about a mile from the rental facility. The second car had three tires fail at the same time.

I say don't do it. Buy new tires. They're much better quality and much safer for you AND other vehicles. I can't tell you how many chunks of rubber I've seen laying around the highway from new re-treads. They might be alot cheaper but are much more hazardous. Just spend the money and buy brand new tires.

Yea treadwright was the company my buddy told me about. Quite frankly it scares me thinking about losing the tread while driving down the highway and possibly totalling my truck. I do a fair amount of highway travel and some decent offroading too so I think I'm gonna just buy new tires but just didnt know anything about the re-treaded tires. I assume they just melt the tread back into the tire?

Yea it kinda blows my mind that they can do that. I mean I'd say the semi treads that are on the highway are because the trailers are over weighted. I wouldn't run re-treads but they might be okay for just offroading.

Treadwright is probably the largest light truck tire retreader out there. What they make is a far cry from semi truck retreads and retreads from the 'old days.'

Do some research, they get excellent reviews. I have not read a single bad review and they seem to have great customer service.

I don't think they could sell as many tires as they do making a dangerous or risky product.

As good as a more expensive quality tire? Probably not. A good tire? Yes.
