So with my first kid I am driving around more than ever before..already drove around a lot. I’m usually getting 17 to 18 mpg due to tires. I’ve been running ko2s since I bought the truck. Now I want to change out to something that has good mpg but I also don’t want to miss out on any light trail I may stumble across. I live in the country too so some performance is appreciated. Any ideas?

Changing tires MIGHT get you 1 more MPG. Not worth it. Use those tires until you wear them out and if want to go down to a smaller less aggressive tire at that time do so.

I currently have less aggressive E rated 265/75/16's and easily get 18-19 MPG on road trips. I rarely check it for normal driving around town but it's 16-17 when I do. That isn't any better or worse than it's ever done. I've taken the Tacoma on 5 cross country road trips and got 20 mpg on one trip. The others averaged 19 mpg even with factory size tires.

If you were to find more fuel efficient tires, they would have a big affect on any off road grip.
Plus, the expense of these tires would take 'years' to recoup in fuel savings. If ever.

You'd see better results in keeping your truck tuned. Proper inflation of tires and being lighter on the throttle and brakes.

Tires can give an increase in fuel mileage. Don't expect miracle results, maybe 1/2 - 1 mpg.

    Although, there are other methods.
    Keep it tuned (already listed)
Remove any weight and cargo possible
Close watch on tire pressure (listed)
good fluids in tranny, xfer case and diffs
    grease the U-joints
Front alignment. scrubbing tires is parasitic drag.
    Reduce any friction you can.
Any drag in the serp belt drive....
feather weight right foot. Keep acceleration below 2000 rpm if possible.
Anticipate stops, lift the right foot, engine brake for a distance.
    Avoid 4WD, except when needed.

I'm currently getting 18-19 mpg in mixed driving V-6 AT

At 15,000 miles per year the cost savings between 18 and 19 mpg at $3/gal is $130.

Maybe All season tires, Keep oil changed, engine maintained, use cruise control when you can, avoid filling gas tank, avoid excess cargo, and light on the skinny pedal. Just tires won't increase milage substantively.

If the pic of your truck is recent, your tires look new and probably have 40000+ miles left in them. It is a totally bad idea to replace those tires with something else to get 1 to 2 mpg increase. In 10 years you probably wouldn’t reach the break even point. Keep the tires you have until they need replacement. The little bit of increased mpg with different tires isn’t going to make any difference in your financial picture. Example - if you put 300 miles a week on your truck and you got tires that increased your mpg by 2 mpg you’d save about 2 gallons a week. That’s about one cafe latte a week. Follow Knute’s advice above and you’ll be just fine.

can you elaborate on the "avoid filling gas tank"? is that just to keep weight down?

Looking for fuel efficient tires to significantly impact the Truck's MPG is about as useful as looking for a virgin in a whorehouse

I'll gladly take the reliability and dependability of a Tacoma, over a few mpg's anyway.

Yep. I think gas weighs 6 pounds a gallon.

I'm a fan of the Michelin Defenders. Mileage bumps up to around 20-22.

The idea of running your vehicle without a lot of gas to save weight is an interesting one..
If you only filled it to half full. You'd only save about 60lbs or so. I dont know how much that would improve one's fuel economy?

Me personally l think I'd rather have more fuel and not have to worry about runny out of l got caught in some kind of situation. Traffic ham, or storm etc.

    But that's just my opinion.
