I have a 2015 Tacoma 4 door trd sport and I am having issues with refueling. The pump clicks every 3 seconds and it takes me about 25 mins to fill it up completely. I have had the fuel neck replaced and that did not solve the issue. Just took it to another shop yesterday and he checked the evap system and checked the check valve and all of that seem to work as it should. He filled the whole tank up with smoke to make sure everything was working properly and it did. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

IDK, but I would lose my mind if it took me 25 minutes to fill up :(

Yeah its terrible. I only put 10 bucks in to get me a day or so, so I don't have to sit out and hole the pump in 30 degree weather.

Happens at every gas station I go to. I even tried to fill it up with my gas cans I have at the house and about 4 seconds in it starts overflowing out of the fuel neck.

At this point even though I hate to, I would take it to Toyota. I know it will be expensive. You’ve taken it to a couple places and they can’t resolve it so take it to Toyota.

Just a guess, but that sounds like someone shoved a siphon hose down there, got stuck and they pulled on it until it broke.

On some '03-'06 Jeep wranglers, they have a check valve/ rollover device (in the filler hose at the tank) that will stick and create a problem like this. After dropping my tank to do the fuel pump, I can't say that I noticed one but I wasn't really looking for one either. Maybe someone else knows for sure.

On the fill neck there is the large hose and a small hose(about 1/2”). The large hose is obviously for filling. The small hose is the vent while filling. Gas goes in, air has to come out. I’m guessing that small hose is kinked or plugged.

Have you tried just pulling the nozzle out an inch or two? It's just the way the gas is splashing around in the next, it's tripping the sensor in the nozzle.

Id also check the 8” long or so rubber hose (in between the plastic neck and the gas tank) for a kink. It’s kinda an s-curve shape with ridges so it can flex and bend.
If that’s pinched somehow, I could see the neck filling with gas and triggering the overflow situation.

I Can almost guarantee your charcoal canister is plugged (assuming the small vent line to the filler next is not kinked). It is not uncommon with Toyotas to have this issue. I have experienced the issue on many of Scions and Camrys.

Here is why: Fuel nozzles shut off once the fuel reaches the tip of the nozzle. There is a venturi valve inside the nozzle that siphons air through the little vent hole on the tip of the nozzle. Once the tank is full, and fuel travels up the fuel fill neck, it hits the tip of the nozzle and blocks that venturi vent, thus triggering the nozzle to immediately stop filling.

Once the canister is saturated, it can no longer filter fuel vapors and causes an air lock in the tank.
As you fill, the air in the tank needs to escape to make room for the incoming fuel. That air is passed through the charcoal canister and scrubbed before it is released. If the air cannot escape, it will experience a high amount of turbulence as the air in the tank is fighting the fuel that is trying to enter. This causes the fuel to back up the filler neck instead of entering the tank. That fuel backup hits the nozzle tip, triggering the venturi and stopping the fuel fill.

I second this... I have 2 diff vehicles and sometimes have this same issue with both trucks. Pull the nozzle out a bit, and I normally “ease into” the trigger before setting it, as opposed to just maxing it out right off the rip.

I'm guessing that most of you with fill issues have in the past tended to fill the tank till the nozzle shuts off, then proceeded to click the nozzle again to make sure it's as full as can be.

One of the biggest root causes to failed charcoal canisters is people over filling the tank by continuing to add fuel after the nozzle shuts off the firsttime. It can force fuel and heavy vapors into the canister, thus rendering the carbon useless as it becomes fully saturated and no longer vents efficiently (think of it as trying to blow air through a dry sponge vs a wet sponge).

Not saying any of this to be a dick, just making these points as I have learned a lot on this subject. I have 8+ years in the industry of designing automotive tanks, filler necks and capless fuel fill systems. As well as countless hours of testing fuel fill with every nozzle sold in the US.

How hard do you wheel your truck? Ever gone through water deep enough to submerge the charcoal canister?
