What could go wrong..... exactly! I have a much greater fear of the dealership than my frame rusting away. I've taken care of it (wash it regularly, not just the body but the underside as well and 2x per year frame tough up with wire brush and paint) and I think I'm in pretty good shape. My frame recall expires this month on the 22nd. I've inspected it myself many times but have not brought it to the dealer. Never found anything to be concerned about. My biggest fear (regarding my truck) is having the frame replaced and being without my truck for several months. Then when I get it back I just know there would be dealer f*ck ups, broken clips / wire harnesses, things not reinstalled correctly, leaks, loose or overtightend bolts, and the gremlins I'd be chasing for years to come. No thankyou! This is my frame. Pics are from about a year ago but still looks the same.

What's up CT folks! Windsor CT here.
    Long time TW lurker.
Pre-Covid, I had considered replacing my 09 taco with a 3rd gen or a full size, but decided to keep her and bring her up to snuff instead over the last several months.
Just finished 5100 install with 884s and SPC UCAs and loving it.

    Hope you stay healthy vssman!

Damn, she clean! I share some of your fear of the dealership.... I think my frame recall expired recently. I try to take care of mine, but she's not nearly as nice as that.

    @KeithB

My frame looks exactly like yours.

My last inspection impressed the manager so much that he called every serv tech over to show it off.

I'm sure that I'm not the first to get this done at this dealership and the few things I had service done there end.with great results.

Got my frame campaign letter Monday for my '14.
I've fluid filmed everything underneath at least once a year since I brought it home new and have zero rust. Since I have until January 2023 to do it, I'm holding off for awhile. It's having the plugs installed that I'm most interested in. Only have 47K on it and only 14K since April 2018 so don't think it's critical to decide right now.

I'm just worried because it looks modified and off roaded. Aren't modern Nissans supposed to be pretty reliable?

Well, i kinda meant 3rd gen 4runners in general. They are essentially a 1st gen taco and share the alot of the suspension and engine parts.

IMO, the modern Nissan 05+ hasnt been redesigned in a long time. Im not sure about trucks, but im just not a fan. Id go for an 97-02 4runner.

She's really looking for a small pickup from the last few years. Later today we're going to see a 2016 Frontier V6 4x4 with 16k miles for $19k

Since a Taco is way out of range, would you recommend a Colorado over a Frontier? Unfortunately there are no Rangers between 2011 and 2018

She's pretty set on a pickup and we'd need to finance, so older tacos are out sadly. Plus I've always found Japanese to be more reliable than American

In the choice of a Frontier over a Colorado, id go for a Frontier. But thats my personal opinion

Thanks man. Id love to get her into a Yota (to replace her camry) but a Frontier with a factory warranty and 16k miles for under 20k is hard to pass up :-/

Are there any 07+ Tacomas up there? If I were to get another one, thats the minimum year Id look at. Have you looked at all buying options? Credit Unions etc? $3-4k is a good down payment.

Huh, I was under the impression most places won't finance older than 10 years. We haven't looked at all buying options, and she only has a rental until Friday so we're kind of panicking lol

Ask around. Or find an 07 at one of those "no credit, no problem " dealerships. And look at reviews too, and use some judgement.

And remember that im some guy on the Internet haha. Try to take it easy. Maybe a family member would let you borrow a car while you find the right deal? Dont jump into something without weighing your options.

Haha, I appreciate that! We are going to look around more. There's actually a 2015 TRD OR down the road were going to see later now. 166k miles but $21k... Her second semester starts soon, in person, and all my vehicles are manual or else she'd use one of those.

But I really appreciate the advice, we're going to look around more

Gotta say, I'm going to be jealous if she gets an OR while I've been off roading an unlocked SR5...

I wouldn't be worried about mileage with a Toyota.

I almost bought a 97 4runner with 328k on it (for a beater) but my fiancé wouldn't let me haha. Ended up getting 2000 Honda Civic with 180k on it, back in July. Its still running today.

I wouldn’t worry at all about a Frontier. Dated design? Yes but comparable to a 2nd gen overall.
