I had a Harley come into the shop I worked at. I was doing an oil Change on it and we had the special Harley drain pan and filter tool. Rounded the bottom of the filter off with the cap... okay time for the "claw" as we called it. (Same as pictured here) and that sucker crushed and twisted the filter, still wouldn't come off. Ended up having to use screwdrivers, hammers, chisels, and a lot of swearing to get it off. Once we finally removed it we realized why it was so difficult. Owner had put that filter on with green loctite! "I didn't want it to vibrate loose and it was all I had..." well buddy, your 15-30 minute oil change just took almost two hours. Here's your new bill for labor...

 

Same filter I’ve used for years with Mobil 1 - 15,000 mile full synthetic oil. Where was it on sale? I’m about due for an oil change.

 

Score: I just bought a used Toyota TRD reusable air filter. Basically identical to the K&N’s but made by Toyota which is nice. I checked the price through Toyota and they go for $106. I paid $30 from a guy selling it on my Nextdoor site. It’s identical in size and shape as stock so it slips right in.

 

106 for a filter... I get that it's reusable but holy damn.

 

Not just reusesble but better breathing which gives better throttle response and better gas mileage, so they say, than the stock paper ones. At $30 it will pay for itself with one cleaning. I wouldn’t pay the $106 from Toyota though. The K&N’s are equally as expensive.

 

Better throttle response in my head means "more throttle to be used" which doesn't equal better mpg...

At one time AEM produced many of TRDs CAI and dry filters and K&N produced the wet filters. So it might be a rebadged K&N with a red seal instead of a black one

Oh I’m sure it is. One nice thing about it is that it’s sold through Toyota so there wouldn’t be any warranty issues with the motor if it came down to it. I’m not worried there in a 2006 truck. Lol

 

Is that an auto parts store, department store? A little more info please. I need to save that extra buck on the filter driving to another state to get it.

Yep, growing up riding dirt bikes and using the same type of air filter cleaning and oiling I learned my lesson at age 12.

We do 90% of out grocery shopping there. And I buy all of my oil and filters there as well. They are basically the same price on M1 and Fram Ultra filters. Plus they have frequent sales on M1 and Valvoline oil that match or even beat Walmart's prices. And if I need some quick cheap oil for something or someone, they carry their own Warren produced house brand....clone to SuperTech, Amazon Basics, Kirkland, Harvest King, etc.
