i installed my new Detroit about a week ago so i figured id throw in my 2 cents on it. the new detroit for the 8.4 inch is designated by the SL in the product code, and it is noticeably different. this is the third vehicle ive had a Detroit in the rear of. i have to mash the gas in a turn to make the inner tires squeal whereas my 22re 4 runner used to do that with only about half throttle. Ive noticed more lash when shifting than with my older Detroit, but i cured that in a day or two by adjusting my shifting style and timing. if you ruled out a Detroit before they are def worth another look. and any anybody with a wrench can install them.

Thinking of doing this also. The open diff drives me bonkers in the snow. Where did you get it from?

i got it on ebay from just differentials for 490.00 plus shipping. jegs and a site called rons machining service also have them for more like 540. this is the third vehicle ive Detroit'ed and the traction difference is amazing. alot of people say they are awful in the snow, but as long as you don't gas it around turns( which u shouldn't do in the snow to begin with) ive never had a problem with it and i live in the rockies.

Yeah for a while I drove my GTO in the snow in Denver. If you're not a moron, it's not hard to drive in the snow. I may look into this for the taco. Thanks for the info.
