Smoke Free for over a week; cold turkey

I figured the more people I told I quit, the more hard headed I would be if I was temped to sneak one in. About 10 days ago, I smoked my last cigarette in a pack and decided that it would be my last one. (Randomly, no big ordeal leading up to it.) I was at about a pack a day. I am not using any pills or gum, just pure willpower. I figure if my refusal to give up on anything has gotten me through some pretty intense schools with the Army, I can overcome smoking. I already feel better, can smell and breath easier! I stopped for about 5 months about half way through a tour in Baghdad; used welbutrin and the gum, but it didn't last. I think this time is for good! Its also nice to not have to stop at a stop and rob every morning and throw $5 away. I spend most of my free time outdoors, run, mountain bike, kayak, etc. Smoking was completely contradictory to my lifestyle. If feels damn good to be smoke free. I was on a counter drug team for about 6 months and part of my job was teaching High School students the dangers of drugs and tobacco. I felt like such a hypocrite leaving the school and lighting one up. Thank God I can practice what I preached now! Wish me luck TW. Peace.

^ I'm happy for you. I smoked my last time about 9 years go. I can't say the same for my drinking but I've been strong for 2-3 months now. Its hard my friend. I will tell you this. You don't want to die from either one. I'm in the medical field and each will give you a severe painful death.

Please stay with it. I'm begging my mom to do the same as she will not. I told her, if she keeps smoking (almost a pack a day). I will receive all the money she has worked hard to invest in her life. I'm talking million or two. I don't want the money but I've warned her that I would blow most of it. . .

I agree. My general attitude for a while was that I would die doing something else before I lived long enough for cancer to get me. My better half and some other things convinced me that I was wrong and that is not a good attitude to have. (Granted, it worked out at the time; just due to my job.) All in all, I am stoked and working 2X as hard to be in better shape now. Smoke can't hold me back and be an excuse any more! I hope your Mom will give it up as well. My parents need to also, so I feel ya bro.

 

I had my last smoke in 1989 after smoking for 14 years. I said God I want to quit so please take the need away. I have touched one since.....You will feel so much better and you food will taste better.

Not to beat a bible here, but that is what I did. Literally got on my knees and begged for help before I went to go to PT prior to work.

Good job bro, I have had the same mentality. Im gonna die young why slow down and why quit. Just had my 27th b day. I am starting to feel age and the effects of smoking for the first time. My date is the 23rd. I hope to have the will power you have.

 

seeing threads like this gives me hope to quit the dip. been going strong since 1981, i quit 3 weeks before going to boot camp but one of my drill instructors started giving me dip once I made squad leader. I give you props OP ! keep on keeping on...........!!!!!!

 

keep it up man, it is well worth it. i quit about 2 1/2 years ago after smoking for about 4 years. i just got really tired of the lack of control i had over it. i didn't want to be dependant on it anymore. if your head is in the right place you will be fine.

I smoked for over 30 years and quit in 2002, basically cold Turkey as well. I was on a ship in the Persian Gulf close to the end of 6.5 months. I have never looked back.

Good luck on your endevour and keep thinking positive. I know you can do it.

 

I've gone 3 months. Chantix worked for me if I could just get past the wanting one still Id be ok.

 

Congrats!! You should take that $5/day that you are not spending on butts and put it in a jar somewhere. You'll be both amazed and encouraged by how fast it adds up. Maybe after 6 months take it out and splurge on a reward. You deserve it.
And by the way, after 6 months you will have saved over $900!!!

 

Great job! I believe the physical addiction is gone in 72 hours(the easy part) but then you have the habitual addiction to contend with which was the hard part for me. You've got to forget all those daily times that you lit up, after meals, in the truck, etc. to break the habit. Sounds like you've got beat. Keep it up.

 

Congrats! and keep it up. I quit cold turkey, it seemed to work the best for me. That was about 25 yrs. ago and no cigarettes since. Once you get past the first couple of weeks, it should get a little easier.
