Startup Popping Noise w/ Video

Anyone got any clue what this might be? Never happens after the truck has been sitting long enough to cool off (like overnight or 8 hour work shift). Seems to be coming from the middle or passenger side of engine bay and seems to be further back toward the firewall. Kinda sounds just... normal to me.

 

Definitely not normal. Mine does not make a popping noise when starting.

I am wondering if all the un- burnt gasses were depleted from the last time you shut your truck off ?
This only happens when the truck is warm ?
When the truck is cold , it has a softer start ?
Are you describing the metal to metal sound at the very beginning of your video?

 

Yes I’m referring to the noise that seems to be right after it cranks for a split second but almost like just before ignition? I think? Only happens when the truck is warm. Injector number 1 was leaking and was replaced along with all 6 injector seals. I swapped out all 6 spark plugs afterward. Still doing this.

 

Do you have a code scanner ?
I am wondering if your evap system is acting up ?

 

Yeah definitely not normal. I'd for sure take it back to whoever did the injectors

 

I unfortunately do not have a code scanner. Can you give me a link to one? Also, I considered EVAP too but I thought the EVAP component that would do this was more on the driver side toward the rear? This noise is definitely in the left half of the engine bay.

 

Most members with Tacoma,s run a scan gauge in an effort to watch their transmission temps .
Its not the coolest looking gauge , but it will scan for codes .

Have u tried not starting it so quickly . Turn the ignition on first to prime the fuel pump then start it to see if it still does it . Sounds pretty normal . These engines are a bit noisy on start up .

 

I have tried priming it for the sake of diagnosing. It seems to help but I’m not willing to accept that I have to prime the fuel pump every time as a workaround for something wrong on a brand new vehicle, you know? Few things about that: first, the fuel pump shouldn’t have to prime on hot/warm start if the truck is holding fuel pressure properly. Second, I have heard other 2020s start and they haven’t made the same noise. Third, it only happens on warm start: I understand the normal noisiness of this engine but this doesn’t happen on other third gens.

 

Sounds more 'metal on metal' to me like hard starter engagement or some exhaust rattling (maybe once it heats up and expands).

Ultimately, it sounds like a trip to the dealer. Can confirm mine doesn't sound like this.

Made an appointment for Tuesday back to the same dealer that replaced the injector. They were very good to work with on my last trip in so hopefully I’ll see that again this time around.

 

To me out sounds like something with the starter. Almost like the flywheel is missing a tooth, the starter isn't engaging all the way or maybe loose. It's for sure not normal.

 

Isn’t the starter on the drivers side down by the wheel? There’s a chance I’m wrong but I had someone start my truck for me while I was looking in the engine bay and I’m almost positive this was from the upper passengers side of the engine bay.

 

I think it's both. It's detonation that's pushing back on the starter. That's what I sounds like to me anyway.

It may not be the starter. Everyone here is just making guesses. Hard to pin point what's going on from a 5 second video in the cab of the truck and a very vague description of where the noise is coming from. All I can say for sure is it's normal and to bring it in.

I haven't looked for the starter on our trucks but I've never seen a RWD car that didn't have the starter on the passenger side right by firewall.

Hey all.. my 2018 Tacoma is making the same popping noise. Did this ever get figured out?

 

Nope. Lemon lawed the truck, got a lot of money and a brand new Tacoma. Came out way ahead financially. Would recommend taking it in to the shop 3 or 4 times and collecting all the paperwork and then file lemon law if they still don’t fix.

Still think it was a fuel pressure issue. Likely a bad high pressure fuel pump or a bad fuel injector (maybe multiple). Either way, the one shop that was of any help whatsoever scoped cylinder 1 after I showed them a soaked spark plug. Technician said the cylinder walls were badly discolored. That’s when I decided that even if they eventually fixed the problem it wasn’t worth risking the potential problems down the road. Lemon law it.
