Aftermarket brakes???

Seeing how everyone and their mother is installing monster truck tires on their Tacoma's these days...why isn't there more talk of upgrading brakes? Wouldn't it make sense to get a brake that is more suited for big tires?

Brakes just don't have that sex appeal. You will never hear anyone bragging about how fast they can stop their truck lol. It's all about size, power, and traction. Safety is for wussies lol.

 

What is your definition of "monster tires"?

 

Could argue 33". Definitely 34-35". But thats just me. Anything that requires significant alterations to reduce rubbing.

 

I agree 100%, but I don't hear much about the 3rd gen (or 2nd) having heat capacity problems and ruining rotors/calipers often so maybe they don't need bigger/better brakes? The brakes just turn the kinetic energy into heat, its the tires, and how much traction they have, that does the work to stop quickly. If you can activate ABS on dry pavement (I could on my 2015 with 275/70/17 C load AT's) then the brakes have the power. If they deteriorate on long descents, then they may need more thermal capacity (bigger rotors/caliper). My 1st gen prerunner, stock wheels and tire size, would go through rotors 2+ times a year doing 95% on road daily driving duty until I changed the calipers/rotors to the WL code tundra brakes and then they never had issues for the rest of the 45K miles before RIP. That seemed like it was fairly common and installing brakes with more mass/thermal capacity fixed the problem so I would say they were too small.

 

I would love better brakes.

I’m still waiting on my 17” TE37’s that will clear them. @MESO also has a 6 piston setup, but the next size larger AND rear disc conversion.

I have the same kit and the rear disc conversion from SOS. Worth every penny!

 

Couple things. Firstly, they arent needed, most people are running a 33 and a few 35s which really arent that big. Secondly, you typically need a 17" or 18" wheel to support a larger rotor and caliper which most of us dont have.

About the only way these tiny truck brakes are going to get any better is to get 4-wheel discs from ToyotER. I too would like much better braking performance...coming down the hill....

 

I found that using "S" mode and selecting the lower gears, this truck keeps the speed manageable even when towing.
