60+ year old thread.

Headache, muscle ache, joint pain, fatigue. Pretty much like a severe flu.

I must say that the medical folks were up front about possible side effects. I was given a hand out regarding theses.

 

Agree. I felt the effects of the shot for a couple days, nothing to write home about.. but my wife had the worst headache ever for two days both times. I felt so sorry for her, nothing I could do for her but tylenol and keep her comfortable. Even with that, the shot's a cake walk compared to suffering through shingles for 4-6 weeks, plus the possibility of lasting side effects.. like eye nerve damage, permanent scarring.. the list goes on. Hard to fathom unless you've been there.
I've been through some rough times in my 75 years, and I try to remember "if it doesn't kill you, it just makes you stronger."

 

I got the Shingrix last year. No side effects as well.

 

Mama had 3 Skippers this past year. Two are in the pic and button-head is off to the side and out of frame.
They're right behind my compost pile and must know I had a bad season. The nerve of em.

You folks are great. I have never actually met a single one of you in person but I truly feel like I'm part of a caring group. Thank you. And thanks @tcBob for this forum; hands down the class of the internet.

We're coping pretty well. Not sure about the recalcitrant wife, she continues to hold us at arm's length. We're hoping she delays having a big service until this horrid cloud at least begins to dissipate. But we have no input and no way to influence it.

I've heard of people having a pretty bad couple of days after getting the new shingles vaccine. I also know people who have had shingles. I choose the vaccine, any day of the week.

Stay safe people. The next couple of months are going to be choppy.

When Mom and Dad were alive, she got shingles and it was a horrible month or two for both of them. I got a shot, and my shoulder was sore for two days. I agree, I'll take two days of being sore.

 

Which vaccine are we talking here -the shingles or the covid? I apologize, I was asking about the Covid

Shingles. But to be fair I have always reacted poorly to vaccines. I was convinced I would be more comfortable dead after the vaccines at induction.

I've heard our local VA will be dispensing the C19 vaccine, but haven't started to my knowledge. I'll wait until Lynn and I can both get it at the same time, anyway.

Our biggest issue is trying to get in and out on the road into the house - it's a friggin mess at this point. It's a township road and all dirt/gravel. The temps have consistently pushed up above freezing every day so with all the snow we have any place there is an incline is a wet, sloppy luge run of ruts. As much as I prefer warm weather, once it starts to snow I want it to stay below freezing until spring!

These first-world retiree problems are tough!! Why didn't you guys warn me?

Speaking of shingles, Getting the new roof on the house as we speak. It's only 17 years old, but too many homes in the neighborhood (all built around the same time) have been having issues. Better to err on the side of caution and get it done then wait and have more costly repairs to make. Full crew so it will be done in one day. Complete ripoff and and hopefully no decking issues. Price is good and quality of work is excellent. The roofer has done several roof's in our neighborhood and has several people waiting.

Happy Friday Porch dwellers! Hoping for better progress today on the garage - yesterday was frustrating and slow, because nothing in this house has ever been square, straight, or level. Spent a lot of effort "compensating", but close to the closing of this part of the work!

Personal Update: Did my exit interview (finally) yesterday late. You know what all that was about???? Just reading and signing and initialing TONS of NDA stuff! Not really anything about MY benefits or retirement, just company arse coverage. They just said regarding benis- everything comes in the US mail - good lord, what is this 2019 or something? That said she did give some handouts at the end.

Bottom Line I have terminated my active employment!! YAYAYAYYAAY!!!!!!

Most of the stuff was nothingburger. I don't even know yet the choices and prices for the retirement health care plans. Then need to compare that to COBRA ($$$$) and all my wife's choices and the WA state marketplace. Trust me this is a fairly complex decision tree and I don't want to go through any one way gates if you follow me (I am 62.5) - until 65 at least. Mix dental into the thing, just not my area of knowledge, holy poop.

One of the handouts was about a very small pension that - I of the younger set - did not figure to get. It was the remainder of a buyout when I first started but was quickly shut off, within a year. When I hired "no pension, just 401K" (just 401K ca 1980) just like all my previous employers over the years. $430/month, yes just hobby money but still. I was able to call (think 1950) to get that started and can see it online (yay 2021) - the nice fella on the phone said I would get a January check IF I got the US Mail paperwork (1910 ) back to them quickly.

So not to bore you to death there is Social Security, FRA 66, 8months, I get around $3K SS. I may wait, take a little early at 65 (~$2700), undecided, no rush. Wife's is a bit less, and I have not yet learned the best order of things on this either.

I still have my business, my Amsoil autodeposits 15th, untaxed. Decent chunk. Sick Bike Parts LLC, we can disperse equal money as needed (LLC is passed through income, so K-1 with me an my equal business partner) - some years taxes have been not helpful. Anyway, no regular income, but should be reforming the company this year.

Now back to those IRA's and 401K and HSA. (No details PLEASE) - I have my second meeting with the Fidelity advisor today. I like her because she adds some outside discipline - so to speak. For example, my wife pays the bills, but we communicate pretty well. Not a lot of secrets if you follow me. Anyway, wife is busy (she is working a few more months, etc) - well neither of us made or keep a detailed, WRITTEN, budget. The advisor kicked me into gear, my wife knew it was time so we made a nice budget. VERY useful for forward looking, and amazingly helping with the multiple health and dental care choices......$$$. She can help with social security as well, but cannot give specific tax advise. She knows my boundaries - she may suggest funds, and I actually don't mind that, but no selling me.

Hahahahahha I wrote all this because the shop cleaning has been on hold!!!

Paul, just enjoy every minute of your retirement, do everything you want to do. You worked long and hard, you deserve a great retirement.
When I retired 7 years ago I did an exit interview. Mine really was a question and answer session, a no holds barred what I thought of things. I was a VP and had to carry out and enforce company policy, procedures, rules and dictates. Many I disagreed with. I used the exit interview to blast certain company policies, the company’s trend toward political correctness, and to defend and promote my employees. The senior VP who conducted the interview was a little taken aback by my rant. I don’t think much changed but it certainly made me feel good.

 

Honestly, when I decided I was done I didn’t even bother reviewing the money side first. I knew I’d have enough and then some but no hard numbers.

For me it was time, period.

 

Yes - I am formulating a whole new phase of my life! Basically birth-college grad phase one, working and all that phase 2, Phase 3? Enjoy life more, stop stressing. (raising my girls was very stressful on us both, frankly didn't know about this!! hahahahha). Time for low stress.

I actually did my rant session already. Good stuff. As the Sr Quality Engineer, I just told them the company we supposedly bought out a few years before now was running the show and the policy, procedures, rules and dictates were somehow all theirs via the management infiltration at higher levels and they are the worst tools ever.............but honestly I really don't give a flinged booger anymore, well maybe until I sell my last ESPP stock. Like you, I felt good!!!!!

 

Yes on the savings side I did this, it was time - but I sure am not throwing money down a rat hole for health insurance. I think I can balance this without stressing over it.

 

OK on a lighter note, my wife bought a net bag of heirloom navel oranges, yesterday, juicy and good. Plus she bought a bag of juicy cara-cara oranges..........and right in the center of that bag was a lemon!

So, I am having some lemon water as I type this. Life = good.

Spent my stimulus $$$ today. Had a new left front wheel bearing put in my truck today. I knew from the sound that I needed a new bearing for about 2 months. Didn’t want to take any further chances driving it so had er done today. Just about $600 parts and labor. Cant complain though. The truck is now 12 years old, 103000 miles and the only other thing ever done other than maintenance was replacement of an a/c hose.
I use to get a new truck and car (for my wife) every 4 to 5 years. I bought this truck primarily for my hunting and fishing adventures and to tow my boat. I like it so much and it’s fits my needs perfectly that I just decided to keep it until it becomes a problem (hopefully not for along time). Lot of memories with this truck. It’s taken me into and back out of a lot challenging boondock desolate areas. It always gets me back home.
