Any of y’all sound deaden the backseat area in a 3rd gen?

I’ve already had the doors apart for speakers so the doors won’t be too tough. Just haven’t ripped anything more than the rear seats out.

Dog will be at day care tomorrow for at least 8 hours, so was wondering if that’s a doable window of time for a first timer?

I’ve got some foam inserts for the rear air vents that will quieten things down. You can have them I have no use

the butyl stuff won’t do much. You need close cell foam and MLV. I’m driving. Will expand on this later.

If you put down a layer of dynamat (or similar) it will help...some. Butyl is more for sound dampening versus deadening.

putting a layer of closed cell foam mat on top of that will further help...some. CCF is more for insulation value but will also block out some frequency’s.

A layer of 1lb/yd MLV is what really kills the sound, it’s designed to be a sound deadener. A lot of people take the extra step to put a layer of 1/16” neoprene between the CCF layer and MLV; the neoprene acts as a decoupling layer.

I’ve got some open cell foam cutouts that fit in the channels of the rear vents. You would have to probably put done a dab of hot glue to keep them in place but that will also substantially help, as those vents introduce a ton of road noise into the cab.

It’s easy enough to take out the rear seats and panels so you can do everything in steps as needed.

What's the difference between Dampening and Deadening?

    (Hint: they are the same)

Thanks @SearArtist, I will need to do more research on this and see what the consensus is for our Tacoma's.

I'm interested in those rear vents though!

Just pull that back plastic off and lay as much Brown Bread or Dynamat as you can get in there.

Start with a layer of CDL and go from there...The Noico brand on Amazon is cheap. That's what I have and will be putting down in my GX as the base layer, then will use their 170mil CCF layer on top, followed by 1/16" neoprene and then 1lb MLV.

The vent foam, you can have. I got them from Jeff

You're talking out your ass a bit. From the article I linked: "The short answer is simple. The automotive industry uses the terms deadening, damping, and dampening interchangeably. We sometimes use different adjectives to describe the "damping" to try and make it extra confusing. You'll often see these terms combined with a descriptive like sound, noise, vibration, or constrained-layer. Vibration damping. Sound deadening. Noise dampening. Constrained-layer damping (or CLD). They are all talking about the same process: reducing the amplitude of vibrations to reduce the noise."

@aturk At the end of the day, if your goal is to make your cab a little quieter and reduce road noise, you're on the right track. But if you are trying to a create a high quality listening environment you'll be limited by the acoustics of the cab. Most of the true "audiophiles" I know are running stock setups in their car and listen to their music on their home set ups. So just depends on what you're trying to do.

As per usual, this snow is seeming less and less likely. Would have been nice to see some accumulation.

I know you forget sometime, and have to be reminded on occasion.

All I'm saying is, you're trying to make this more complicated than it is. IF there were a difference between "dampening" and "deadening" (there's not) it makes no difference in this application. @aturk has a steel box going down the road at 70mph and he wants to make it quieter. This isn't a sound studio we are talking about.

But if you want to be the truck acoustic expert, I'll just stick to the other areas I'm an apparent exert in. I won't fight you on it. :hattip:

    see my edit above ;)

2nd edit - like i said, start with some CDL and go from there. it's usually enough for most people.

I'm old and don't like road noise, so I'm going all out on mine.

If it were going to be a little colder the roads would be total shite tomorrow, with the way the rain is coming before the snow. But as it is it prob wont be a problem.

I honestly wish it would dump a foot or more of snow. It's been a long while since we've had a decent amount.

I've not seen decent snow in the 5 years I've had my truck. The last time we had good snow was 2014 and too my shame I was driving a 6 speed Jetta.

Edit: was diesel though, kind of a fun car actually.
