Throw a bloody dead deer in there, some stinky garbage and some mud. Make it ugly. No one will want it.

Well, depending on where you live alot of urban areas have decriminalized petty theft. So the going to jail threat is non existent sometimes. But you're not wrong about the heavy/clumsy part increasing the odds of getting caught by the owner. That could end badly.

I've noticed the bed mat sometimes works too good and it is hard to slide things in (This happened when I bought my gun safe), so I had to bunch it up at the head of the bed. For this reason I don't want to permanently secure it to the bed, but I do like the idea of a keyed locking cable or something similar that can be quickly disconnected.

Do the techs have to go to a special school to learn how to do that complex installation? ;)

You're totally right. And lesser things have been stolen. Just something I never even thought of securing based on it's pettiness. Nothing surprises me with troglodytes though.

They just need to certify that they have lifted weights at least one day in their life to qualify for the job.

This is true. Often times, it's not worth it to physically arrest someone and bring them to the jail just for a Magistrate to release them with an unsecured bond or written promise to appear in court. It is a waste of time, so most Officers give the suspect a citation with a court date and release them on the spot.

I would not worry about it. The thing weighs like 40 pounds and they would have to take the time to roll it up to carry it off. Not like you can make a quick get away on your own with it. Chances are it will blend with my the bed and not be noticed by most that aren't very familiar with the Tacoma.

Best advice is get a tonneau cover if you are interested in one or try to park in a garage if you have one or just park in well lit areas. My neighborhood is one were there is the same crimes with kids and losers taking things from unlocked cars parked on the street. I park off street outside with a motion security light on the parking area. They so far stay away from my vehicle. Thrives don't like the lights put on them.

I have had a bed mat in every pickup I have owned since 1996, never had one walk away.

for the record I have lived in rough neighborhoods as well, east LA and Whittier. No issues

After seeing how thin the OEM bed mat was in my colleagues second gen prerunner, I opted for a 3/4" thick 4'x6' horse stall mat that cost me $40. With the tailgate up I can't even lift it out it's so grippy and heavy.

If the OEM gets stolen, pick one of these up.

I had to open a case with Toyota Corp because the stupid dealer installed my bed mat in-correctly. What crooks, hope fully a company like Toyota will rectify this by giving me a Pro at a super huge discount with full extended warranty.

Toyota did such a poor job at the installation, that the damn soccer balls roll around freely. This would have never happened in my 4.0 2nd gen.
