I'm trying to figure out my future tent set up. I've had a regular old fold out CVT years ago on my 4runner, but I'm looking for maybe a hardshell this time. I just got a camper shell so if I get a matching rack, I can get a longer tent. Thinking of maybe the GFC SuperLite. I love the Ikamper mini, but 3k is hard to justify.

Anybody have any experience with a long footprint tent like a clamshell extending from the camper shell over the cab a bit? I know the bed can move a little independently from the cab, so I wouldn't want to bolt it to both the shell and cab racks right?

This is the only part of your post I can comment on, but you are correct. You do not want to bolt something to both racks. The bed is hard mounted to the frame whereas the cab is mounted on rubber bushings. That's why the two move separately from each other.

I've actually seen that! Making me lean toward the Superlite from both a weight and easy perspective. That vid made me love the Ikamper mini though haha.

fuck. yea i want an ikamper or clone, but that 3k is steep. MIA has a similar one that was at costco for 2k, but pretty sure it sold out real quick.

I sprang for the iKamper and have been loving it so far. Took the inner insulation layer out for a test in some 20-something overnight temps in Bishop and it did well.

If anybody is looking for a RTT my one recommendation would be to go with a hardshell wedge-style if possible. Being able to point that shell at the wind is crucial... wind sucks in any tent, but especially in one you've elevated up off the ground in the absence of any kind of wind shelters.

That is why I want the hardshell. My CVT in wind was like a helicopter was taking off next to me. I kept earplugs in it for camping because a light breeze would set it off.

Looking forward to the maiden voyage this weekend. I ditched the stock mattress and put in the exped megamat. It’s narrower than the tent base but that’s advantageous because now I’ll have a hard surface to rest stuff on if needed. Anyways, gonna get down in the teens but I should be toasty warm with the gear I have.

even the mini is still a thicc bish. I went with the FSR Odyssey and love it. Thin, quick and easy set up/take down. No windows, hard shell through and through. Big fan.

I have spent some really stormy nights in my 23 Zero Weekender with no trouble at all. I did have to strap the top rung of the ladder to a wheel spoke though because the wind closed the tent up with me in it one night:rofl:

True. The drag on the larger tents is a big negative. Your set up is awesome now man! I remember when you got your first RTT haha.

i wish that were the case. Any and all material became a sail. Tore my rainfly, window flaps, broke two zippers on the outdoor flap, lost several of the bone tie downs and got zero sleep in the process.

ive only seen my tent (tepui kukeman) fold on itself once. I had the rain fly in front of the door open with the canvas door closed. I guess the wind caught it and lifted the whole thing up. I was out on a mtb ride and came back to see my gf trying to get it back down. now i leave the fly down and doors closed pretty much all the time

That was a really bad storm that night, but I do it from now on since it made me paranoid.
That’s a bummer you had so much damage and loss of sleep :(
