Same design as 2005, same problems, Tacomas have always had this issue. Tacomas eat rock chips. They will find the chip that caused the crack, even if you can't.

Sucks for us that live in winter areas that gravel the roads.

Replaced mine today at a cost of $270, with a lifetime warranty on the workmanship and glass defects.

Colorado sucks ass with their decision to use sand during winter and not salt.

I had a crack out of no where - took to dealer. They found a fucking tiny chip was under the windshield wiper. I'm like how the fuck did that happen. Where the wiper is its behind and under the hood. Plus to hit the window there it had to happen when raining and me driving.

Anyway, of course they didn't cover it. Crack started out about 3" ended up snaking all the way up across and down my windshield. Took it to a local window shop - mom and pop shop. They replaced with OEM window with sound deadening and go-pro mount. Cost me $300 installed. Took em 2 hrs to replace. Good to go. Replacement window is PPG made so not "Toyota" but hopefully since made in USA I won't need another one.

I had this happen last month but from a big rig throwing up a rock. I have Farmers and their glass replacement only cost me $100 for factory glass that came with the GoPro mount on it already. Because it’s a 2017 they didn’t scoff at factory glass approval.

Yeah, I was paranoid when replacing my glass. It was also earlier in the third generation so when the glass first broke, there was literally no aftermarket available at all and toyota wanted well over $1000. Luckily I was able to wait a bit for the aftermarket to catch up which brought the OEM price down. Hopefully it's even lower now. Are you able to see any warpage on your glass? Where it is more obvious is looking "sideways" at it.

Rock broke my windshield, insurance replaced it for $50. It pays to get those extra coverages with your insurance

I have a commute with a lot of road construction right now (East Bay to Stockton). I have many small chips on my windshield and a 14" crack that I had filled in. The fixes are not perfect but it works for now until this project is over. When the project ends, I'll probably get my windshield replaced.
My 01 TRDOR on the other hand is going on 130k miles on it's original windshield.

There was more likely than not a chip in the windshield and it cracked in the heat.

I have a 2nd Gen but bew windshield cost me about $450.

Yeah I changed my comprehensive deductible to cover new windshields after that. And lucky I did because the next one cracked two weeks later.

So I'm at 4700ish miles on my 2020 TRD OR and while driving home today the windshield cracked seemingly out of nowhere.

My question is before trying the dealership (due for a 5,000 do nothing service anyway) should I remove the prinsu rack? I don't I didn't have anything on it and I don't think it actually had any effect but will they try to point to that?

    Working on it ...
Just had mine replaced by Safelite on Monday. They put in OEM glass as I requested and did recalibration. I had to drop 50 bucks as that is my comprehensive deductible with my ins. The bill they gave me said with all included, it would have been $1079.

The glass by itself was $579.00. Labor was $108.50 and some “kit” was 40 bucks. They charged $250 for the recalibration.

Glad I had the comprehensive coverage on my insurance policy that included the glass.

Its due to them using the thinnest glass possible yet keeping safety rating. When its hot and you slam your door getting out it causes a pressure build up and they crack out of nowhere. Happens every day.

There are louvered vents in the back of the cab to relieve pressure, surprised that closing the door would cause the windshield to break but I guess anything is possible. Seatbelt Mike mentions them at around 6:25

Pressure cracks start from the edge of the glass. Chips start cracking wherever impact occurs.

Windows on these 3rd Gens awful. I've already been through one windshield and within 6 months got 3 rock cracks in the replacement.

We have a fairly upright windshield which opens up the possibility of more rock impacts, the FJ Cruiser or Jeep Wrangler probably also suffer this.
