I lovingly refer to them as "Baby Duratracs".

I’m going to be looking at tires this year to upgrade from oem. Oem are ok but I feel a truck that claims off-road should have some more aggressive tires. Anyway I’m looking at duratrac, ultraterrain, and ridge grappler. For you guys that run them how loud are the duratrac really? My last truck was a v-10 excursion with toys open country and a manga flow exhaust. Could the duratrac really be that loud?

It's tough to say, as people are very subjective when it comes to loudness/noise levels. For me, I really liked Duratracs. Their look, their off road capabilities, their snow traction, etc. In 45,000 miles of use throughout Colorado and Utah, I never once ran into a problem. That being said, I decided not to purchase them again because they were too loud for me. My Tacoma is also my daily driver, and when I was by myself, I could deal with the noise. Once other people were in the truck with me though, the noise seemed unbearable. We couldn't have a normal conversation at 55+ mph because of how loud they were. There was a lot of awkward almost-yelling and asking "what did you say?" It's not like the noise lever hurt my ears or anything, but it wasn't fun to talk with other people while in the truck. A lot of that has to do with the Tacoma itself though. It lets a lot of exterior noise in. From the outside, the Duratracs weren't that loud compared to dedicated mud tires.

So far, the Ultraterrains are the sweet spot for me. Great traction, look good (not quite as aggressive as Duratracs though), and very manageable noise levels. I can now hold a normal conversation even up to 80 mph on the freeway.

I have no experience with Ridge Grapplers though. I'd say, if you're really into the look of Duratracs, and you almost never have other people in the truck with you; then go ahead and get them. I really liked the Duratracs. But if you think you'll have people in your truck and want to have a comfortable conversation, then look elsewhere.

As with most AT and Mud tires for sure when new the noise isn't bad but as they start wearing down the noise increases. I actually sold my duratracs with the rims they were on when they were half worn and getting noisy. They were awesome in the snow and offroad. Then I got Toyo AT2 which were much smoother and quieter but had issues getting them balanced, sold those half worn too ;) The Wrangler Authority's I have now are getting to the point as described above but I'm mostly by myself so no big. I drive the wifes MDX on Michelins when with family and its butter smooth. I'm on here because I'm looking to get the ultraterrains later this year.

For those that have had the Ultraterrains for a while, how are you liking them? Have they held up/worn well? Considering a set for my DD in 265/75R16 and would love to hear some feedback from those that have had them a while and how they have compared to other tires you've had.

Bought my 265/75-16s (SL rated) almost 2 years ago. They have 9500 miles on them and tread wear is very even. Started with 16/32" tread depth and they now measure 13/32". The roads around here are almost all curves, hardly anything straight, so I tend to wear out tires pretty quickly. I'm very happy with my UltraTerrains.

Thank you guys for the quick feedback! I've been debating between these and Duratracs, but for a DD, seems like these may have slightly better road manners while still offering solid performance for whatever I can throw at them. Sounding more and more like Ultraterrain is the way to go for my needs.

Does anyone have info on the sidewall strength in regards to off-roading between the SL and E rated in 265/75/16?

I'm approaching 30k and have all 5 being rotated every 5k. Not having many alternatives to compare to, but they've been great so far. Mostly highway commuting driving with daily dirt and washed out gravel roads. I've had them on for a few trail rides, some pasture/field paths. Mud was decent, but it's not a MT tire... I'm running 285/70r17 E loads.

They've handled dirt, VA rock and mud trails well (though limited miles), on road water/wet and dry handling has been very nice, they're around 12/32 all around.

Do they pick up and throw rocks as much as the stock wrangler tires do?

I didn't have the stock tires, mine were pro comp at sports. Its just expected with the thousands of feet of gravel roads we live on and around...I will say most of them are gone by the time I'm at work (~38 miles of interstate driving each way).

Did you ever get an answer to this? Thinking about this exact setup.

Just got a set mounted up in 265/75R16 yesterday and loving them so far! I recommend going with the SL load range unless you are doing some serious wheeling. DT initially made a mistake and put the E1 load range on my truck first and they definitely have a stiffer ride and noticeably reduced acceleration and gas mileage. I realized the mistake on my drive home and they were quick to get me fixed up the next day.

Yes, I go in for my 6th rotation tomorrow. I'll grab the tread depth, but last rotation 4 of 5 were at 13th/32nds if I recall correctly.

Mostly highway and interstate miles, daily gravel and dirt. A few Virginia easier trails, no serious east coast off-roading, but some grass and mud track time, but they're no Duratrac or other MT in those conditions...they did well with the limited snow we've had since putting them on. No issues with wet road conditions, either and they're still pretty quite on the road.
