That was the 1st song I ever played in a real paid for studio. I still have a 4 track tape of us playing it at practice. Totally butchered it. lol!

Lol. Thanks.. I just started playing and always wanted a hollow body so I can learn across different types of music. Right now I’m interested in country, rock, blues and rock-a-billy.

Here's a fun story time for anyone bored / wanting to read.

A few years back (maybe like 3-4 years), my wife and I went to Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco on a tour for the first time and got to see everything there as it is today. The cells, the outdoor areas, etc. I found it really cool / fascinating and I took the below picture (edited to black and white):

    38936D30-7BF1-4D09-99F3-E4D6E13450E3.jpg

A few days after our trip I discovered a video of Sturgill Simpson covering an old Stanley Brothers tune called "Medicine Springs".

I became almost obsessed with the video and the song.. such beautiful yet simple songwriting and such a driving rhythm. When I say I became "obsessed" I mean almost to the literal sense, it was a daily play and at least 4-5x when I did, for probably a month or two. I came to the realization that the song is about a story of a man meeting a girl in the mountains, falling in love with her and stealing stuff to give her cause he had no moneys.. and thus ending up in jail where he finds out via a letter he "can't hardly read" that she passed away. Sorta shook me to my core, considering I had just been to Alcatraz, rumors of it being haunted and whatever else. A piece of me wonders if a spirit clung to me and the song found its way to me somehow.

Anywho, I eventually took it upon myself to learn it as best I could in 'simple form' from the video. I can play and sing it these days, although I don't know how great I sound.

Here's the video, in case anyone wants to hear a re-vitalized old bluegrass tune :)

I want to one day go back to Alcatraz and see if I can bring my Martin with me.. play it and see what comes out. I'll know for sure then if something followed me out, I think.

I’ve been playing Sturgill pretty much non-stop for about a year now. On repeat in the truck, on my YouTube playlist, working in the garage. All Sturgill, all the time. Everything he does is gold. Whether it’s originals, or lending his voice, and crazy good guitar playing on a cover, although I’m partial to High Top Mountain and Sailors Guide to Earth. This is a great cover though...

Metamodern holds a special place in my heart. It’s when I found him, and I would take the CD case to work and read the lyrics on my breaks trying to study his songwriting.

His new bluegrass albums are pure gold.
