Scam?

So I got a call from my mother last night and she told me I need to call this lawyer back and that it was very important. So I called last night around 8:00pm. The first time someone picked up and didn't say anything and I said hello and they hung up. So I called back. A guy with a deep voice answers and I told him who I was.

He said that this was Bullock and Bullock and his name was Sam Gray, and that they were collecting a debt from before 2003 for a Sprint LTD landline. He said I owed over 400 but would settle for 240. He said if I didn't pay by Dec 17th that they would sue me. I said I have no recollection of having a Sprint landline but I am all for paying my bills. I asked for the account number, or phone line number associated with the account.

He didn't have any. He didn't even have my social, last four, anything. I told him, "now doesn't this sound fishy?", He agreed lol. He said I usually have account information such as ssn, etc. He asked me to write two letters in the effect of "This is fraud, I have never given Sprint LTD any vital personal identification, etc. Then he wanted me to date and sign and fax it to him.

This seems even more fishy because what if they are seeking my signature? I googled this Bullock and Bullock and cannot find anything by the 877 number or the fax number he gave me. I filed an online complaint with the ftc.

Does this sound like a scam? Am I being paranoid? I've always been an avid checker of my credit report and never has a Sprint account ever shown up. I was going to call Sprint but they don't do landlines anymore so I don't see it being helpful. Thoughts?

I wouldn't give them anything. If you've never had a landline with Sprint, how can they sue you? Plus, trust me, no debt collector would be that willing to settle your debt down that fast. If they did, they'd be out of business. If they call back, tell them to go F-themselves and wait until something official comes your way before you do anything. They should have account numbers at the least, even if they don't have all of your information.

If they don't have your account number or proof that you ever had a Sprint landline (much less proof that you were delinquency on your bills), then there is no way they could sue you. The burden of proof is on them. These guys are scum bags and try to scare people into paying bills they don't have to.

Scam, I would call him back and pull the same shit on him. Tell him you are with the State of _____ and you are calling about some back child support he owes to 3 different children.

That would be fun!

 

Scam...you did the right thing about reporting them to the ftc. I would also notify the local media about it as well before someone sends them money.
