Just bought my first house and have a garage to put all my tools in and work on my truck, no excuse to not do my own oil changes now! Plus, I always hated having other people touching my vehicle, if you want it done right do it yourself and all that.

 

Maybe dumb question, but why remove the oil filter first? Wouldn't opening the drain plug on the oil pan release the vacuum and the oil filter would then drain?

 

Either way you will still get oil coming out the filter. Some filters have a spring loaded anti-drain back valve, so the engine doesn't starve for oil on startup.

 

Also, what happens if you use six quarts, just adding that last extra half quart? Doesn't seem like that much that would cause an issue with oil pressure. I know on my airplane there is a oil drain tube and extra oil just kind of gets pushed out that under the belly of the plane, and it settles on the amount it likes (you start with 8 quarts and after flying a few times it settles in at 6 quarts).

Last question. I was a bad boy and let my oil run to almost zero. There is some encrustation inside the filler cap. Anything I can do, additive wise, to clean the buildup out and negate my poor maintenance?

 

The more I learn about aviation, the more I learn about how bad it is for the environment... No there is no purposeful drain for overfilling. It's your truck but I haven't heard of anyone's truck exploding because some oil monkey put in too much.

White goop in the oil cap is from short drives and condensation == normal. If you're worried about any other caking you could run some Seafoam, Marvel Mystery oil, or other "snake oil" in your crankcase.

 

Aviation is environment friendly compared to passenger trains.

Don't know if it has changed, but Railways are allowed to dump raw sewage on the tracks from the passenger Toilets.

 

Best reason in my opinion it to make sure it comes off. My first oil change on this truck I tried at the filter first as I did not have the specific tool. When I was unable to remove it I was glad I still had an engine full of oil to get me to the local hardware store and back for the right tool. It's a good idea with anything you're draining and filling to make sure everything comes loose before you go after the drain plug. Differentials and T-Case are a great example, crack that fill plug before you even think about the drain plug. Good practice!

i was looking at the oil filter on the top right side of the engine and yes it is, it have a drain tube at the buttom of the filter assembly. i intend to change oil in Synthetic 5W-30, at least i don't have to change oil as often as for conventional oil...

 

Used to change my oil on my car all through high school and for several years afterwards. First time changing the oil on my 13’ Tacoma this morning and was a bit surprised. At some point in the 8yrs I’ve been having my oil changed, the mechanic removed the plug from the filter catch. I managed this with the 5/16” hose connection in the 1st post. Also, the washer on the drain plug was smashed up in the threads on the pan, thankfully no leaks. For the 20min or so it took me to do this simple yet essential task, I think from here on out I will never send my Tacoma in for an oil change. Thanks to this thread, it made it really easy to plan ahead and prevent any unnecessary messes in the process.

While the Fumoto valve is popular, just came across Valvomax, same concept, but no lever to worry about accidentally coming open. Thoughts ?

 

The fumoto lever requires a lift, then a turning to open, and also has a safety clip to prevent the initial lifting of the lever. I’ve found no fault with the fumoto except the longer time to drain than a simple plug. The advantage of any of these type plugs is that there is no chance of stripping the threads, and no leakage.
