I thought that was aluminum at first haha. How did the casting weld? Good call on the 308

Other than being generous with the filler close to the base metal to avoid cracks it wasn’t too bad (sulfur seemed to be a bit high).

@OVTune can you help me out here? About to pull the trigger on a Powermax complete kit from a member that has changed his mind and wants to sell.

I need a definite answer on fuel upgrades.
Are larger injectors required for the Powermax turbos? The first page of this thread says they’re required, but the guy selling this kit and several other people in this thread are under the assumption that injectors are not required for base boost (7psi) on the Powermax kit. Can you clarify?

The first page also states a fuel pump upgrade is required for Powermax’s. Is that the case? Or only if the truck is on the fuel pump recall list?

No fueling upgrades needed for Powermax at 7psi, also no need to worry about the fuel pump unless you need the recall performed.
If you need the recall performed OVTune has advised to wait or buy new fuel pump before installing either kit.

A few people have said that, the conflicting information worries me though.
Injectors shouldn’t really be what makes it or breaks it for me, but the extra $1600 and install difficulty is enough to make me question it.
360hp/400tq is plenty for me... never plan to turn the boost up at all.

Is the casting stainless? If so 308 would suffice, but if it’s cast steel I would have gone 309 or 312 for the extra nickel content. Nickel content really helps ductility. If you really wanted to be cautious on castings you could go with a 99% nickel rod. Might be expensive, but cracking later on after install might be more costly in time and frustration. I’ve seen your custom exhaust thread and you have skills. Not questioning your abilities, but welding is a passion of mine and how I make my living. I just thought I would pass along a tip. Been watching this thread for a long time.

In another post he mentioned CF8, cast stainless. 309 is what came to mind for me too, but he's also a Jody Disciple, so I'm sure he heavily considered it.

I was in between 309 and 308. 308 seemed to “wet in” better so I went with it. I’m by no means an expert or remotely close to it. The rail is magnetic, and the spark test was a bit elusive (8-12” streamers on the white color side). I concluded that it’s CF8M (carbon content on the high side), but could be wrong. I’ll get some 312 and 99 Ni filler rods ordered to try. Thank you for the tips!! I’m planing on pressure testing it just to be safe.

Is there a tig welding sub thread on TW?

If it’s indeed cast stainless then what you used will be fine. 312 and 99 nickel are good for stainless to carbon or for cast irons. In fact, most of your “super duper” weld anything “maintenance” rods are 312 stainless.

If the carbon is high on the casting you could use an ER308H that has more carbon in it. Higher carbon stainless is common in high heat applications like in power plants for handling steam. Knowing a little more about what you did I think you are in good shape. Never thought I would read about someone doing the spark test on TacomaWorld.:welder:
