What terms are you looking at? I work at a dealership and was able to get a 10yr/125k warranty for $1,500. Not saying you can get it for that depending in what the warranty company is and the other options related to the warranty.

The standard warranty is a joke. 3 year 60km? really stingy on Toyota's part but they're Toyota so they can get away with it.

so extended warranties sound great on paper...but in reality you are paying them thousands of dollars to fight dealers on every warranty claim, take time off work just to be BS'd by service departments all over your city and get shoddy work done by 19 year old techs who aren't old enough to know or care how much a $40K truck is worth and how it should be handled for a customer.

so no. when the warranty runs out go find an independent shop, someone, anyone but just know that the dealer service department will not treat you like royalty because you have an extended warranty, you'll just be regretting the purchase when you find out they will do everything they can including lying to your face to avoid having to do the work.

Take a few moments, read the fine print and with a highlighter, mark all the conditions that would deny you warranty repair. Toyota has A LOT of “outs” drafted in so they can stop warranty repairs when they can see those costs become more than you paid for the package.

The fine print stipulates that ‘if a part is wearable, it is not warrantable.’ I had the distinct pleasure of asking Toyota Canada about that small written detail in the fine print. I asked, isn’t every part a wearable part? Toyota’s answer, “yes”.

I've found that it's best to wait until the 3/36 factory warranty is nearly up. Gives you time to decide if you want to keep the vehicle long term, and if you think the extended warranty will be needed. On a couple occasions I've purchased them upfront and then sold the vehicle before the 3/36. I lost a bunch of money on the prorated return from the extended warranty that I never used...

Here’s my real experience for all of you to consider when picking an ECP extended warranty,...

When the extended warranty packages are presented we pick from a long list of TIME and MILAGE coverage. We don’t pick from repair cost values. RIGHT?!

We are also told that if in the case of writing off your vehicle and you haven’t used up all your TIME and MILAGE ECP extended warranty, we can cancel the warranty and have the remaining warranty value pro rated and a refund issued.

(The real truth of Toyota’s extended warranty is coming...)

I bought the 200,000klm 7year, PLATINUM warranty. I paid $3200 CAD for it. I wanted a “great” warranty for my 2017 TRD Sport.

I drove 3 years and @ 134,500 I collided with an elk and it wrote off the truck. The last ECP action I took was to call Toyota roadside assistance for a tow truck and i was told I didn’t qualify, not once but TWICE as my truck and I are sitting on the side of the highway. I pleaded again invoking my warranty and I was put on hold...Toyota reluctantly granted me a tow truck. It’s there in black and white under accident collision service.

The dealership then told me to cancel the warranty plan and that it would be pro rated and a cheque would be sent 4-6 weeks later. I waited 9 weeks and called Toyota Canada to ask where my ECP refund cheque is. They couldn’t tell me and told me to call the dealership! The dealership then put in a request for me to ECP. At 10 weeks the dealership said I wouldn’t get a refund cheque because ECP repair costs were more than what I paid for the plan. They didn’t know why ECP wouldnt have reached out to me to tell me themselves!

ECP had replaced the driveshaft, a clutch peddle assembly and replaced the rack and pinion and the steering column. All within 100,000klms. @ 120,000 the syncro gear and first gear started grinding in the MT. I went in for warranty repair for it and was met with strong resistance, in fact was told after 100,000kms warranty is provided by 3rd party and THEY DONT PAY DIAGNOSE FEES. I was told I’d have to pay $1950 for those fees and ECP may still not even replace the gears and would in fact NOT replace the transmission. I refused to pay the diagnosis fees and they asked ECP if the syncro and first gear would be replaced. ECP said “no, items are wearable parts”.

Is paying for Extended warranty worth it?

I was able to purchase the 6 year/100k Platinum coverage for around $850. To me it was a no brainer. Hopefully I never need it.
Just remember that it starts from the day you purchase the warranty so wait until the 3/36 is almost up. You can buy it from any dealer as long as your still in warranty.

Just to update you on the above, I called Toyota Canada today to ask to be connected to their ECP division to explain why I was not getting a pro rated cheque issued for warranty that was not used up since I wrote off my truck and cancelled my extended warranty and they hung up on me.

I didn't buy an extended warranty, I bought a Toyota instead.

The dealership is the biggest beneficiary of an extended warranty, not the vehicle owner.
