Is it possible to add 4x4

Hey I received my brothers 3rd gen tacoma trd sport is it possible to add 4x4 and around what price are we talking aboit

 

Best bet is sell it and buy a 4x4 Taco.

 

With enough money, anything is possible. If you want 4WD, it will be cheaper to sell it and buy one with 4WD.

 

I have an extra transfer case I’d sell ya

How much do you want to spend? Minimum would be $2000,doing everything yourself. $5000-$6000 having it done.

 

Absolutely is if you’re willing. Guy here in Alabama has done it to his second gen and posted pics of his progress along the way. Lots of work and time and busted knuckles but very doable.

Not worth it, sell it and move up. Too much to invest and it will never be perfect!

 

Watch for a “whole” donor vehicle. It will cost more to buy piece by piece even salvage if it’s from a junkyard. Think about how much you would be paying yourself hourly for doing this swap.

This website is pretty good for whole donor vehicles - but watch out - I’ve seen some crime seen interiors complete with bullet holes...

Yep, a complete 4WD parts truck from an insurance write-off at a junkyard would do it.
The only time I would ever consider doing that much work is if 4x4 Tacomas were super rare or super expensive to buy. They’re not though.

Like others have said, cheapest route is to sell your 2wd and buy a 4wd.

There is a member presently swapping a 3rd gen manual transmission into a 2nd gen truck to assist in eliminating the dreaded release bearing chirp .

Check you auction yards. You may find one written off. Not sure what they sell for but if you’re lucky all those parts would be in good order and the other parts can be sold off.

 

For the sake of theoretical debate, wouldn't it be easiest to find a donor transmission and then use a FJ transfer box? Seems like that would be least intrusive on getting the weird 3rd gen electronics to play nice.

 

I appreciate all the feedback but once aging giving the truck up is not a option it belonged to my brother who passed from covid so I wanna keep this truck till I literally die so the coast I see from dealer is about a 8 thousand dollar difference I refuse to believe I can't do it for either the same price or cheaper last resort is taking it to Toyota and having them do it...but if your gonna respond to give the truck up then kick rocks!

 

The problem is that it's not as simple as adding a transfer case and a switch. There's other components, wires, and not to mention ECU issues. If you do pursue this, I am interested to hear the final outcome!

 

I'm definitely going to have it done it will suit what the truck will be used for amd once aging its going to be a family hand me down for years to come I took over payments on it and will be passing it down to my nephew my late brother's son...

 

I would just keep as original and drive on the weekends.

 

I'm from a small town making it the best taco in town is the goal point blank money isn't unlimited but if saving and working harder to accomplish it is what need be done so be it but once aging save the time if your going to suggest to trade it out for God sake I've heard 100 times already but some ppl don't understand sentimental value guess the have no morals
