So I'm unhireable... I have no work experience

The 10 dollar an hour flux core job I applied for told me because I have no work experience they won't let me test even though I've back gouged at school and am perfectly capable of doing it

$10 an hour? What is this Mexico... in the 30s? Anyway, you need references when you're just starting out. Anyone you've done work for that will vouch for you, or an instructor or teacher?

Yeah I listed them in the application but the receptionist phoned the person in charage of hiring and they told her that I couldn't test because of no work experience I even told them I have a combination certificate

Probably had a guy just outta school bs his way to a test and almost blow himself up with a torch... So no more just outta school kids

The only other job is for spacex welding structural on buildings but also must have 3 years... Soo yeh

That's lame. How the fuck is anyone supposed to get experience if they can't get hired.

I bet half the guys looking to do structural come outta class still making shit like this...

Which makes me think maybe the best place to cut your teeth for experience might be a small production welding job that doesn't require a cert. I did a lot of production welding when I was working at the machine shop, that time builds skill.

Key to breaking out into the trades is to know someone. Or have a damn good resume on a linkedin profile that lets recruiters know your available. I had probably 4 emails a day from recruiters off linkedin. Most were temp agencies but if they liked you they'd put you on company pay roll after an amount of time.

I find it hard to believe there are only 2 welding jobs available in your area...how are you looking for work? Just using Craigslist or?

I'm sure there's a bunch of independent fabricators that need a hand, even if it's cutting materials and doing finish grinding you'll at least get in the door

Speaking of references, my old supervisor from work (I've had like...5 or 6 of them in the 5.5 years I've been here, there was a time when they just sort of kept quitting or kept getting fired), reached out to me last Friday asking if he could use me as a reference for a new job he's applying for in CA. Thought that was kind of odd considering I worked under him when I first started here.
