I'm just stoked for better organization (vs current setup of shoving bins under my sleeping platform) and a "guest room"!

 

How much per foot ? $500 seems like a lot of $

 

thats pretty good considering a goose gear set up is 5k plus for everything. The connection pieces/hardware and aluminum add up quick. If you can build it under 1000 your doing pretty good IMO

 

Its kinda relative. Looks like $6 per foot or so. I can see how the endcaps fittings blabla adds up though.

 

If you want to save money, you don't get it pre-cut and you may fabricate your own corner brackets using angle metal cut to width…

 

I had a whole idea of what I was going to do in my head (I'm pretty alright at playing Real Life Tetris), but I had never considered going the 80 20 route. I was going to make it all out of birch, but hey, this may save me some weight. I'm starting to get weight-paranoid.

 

You went with 1" square it looks like for the 80/20?

 

That was my logic, and you get exactly what layout/features you want. 8020 is never a "cheap" option compared to wood, but it's far easier to work with and configure/reconfigure.

I also paid to have the ends tapped for each piece to make things easier. One of the bigger costs so far is in the corner gussets (close to $100), as I wanted to make sure this thing is rather robust since it will most likely also be used for more than 1 person sitting, two dogs, and as a step to climb upstairs.

Yea, these are for sure ways to cut down on cost. I chose to go with my exact lengths since it was already in CAD and able to pull the dimensions, and I assembled it in my condo (no metal cutting required ha!)

 

It's 90% 1" square. The longer bench will also have two pieces of 1"x2" for support/reinforcement mid way. I sat on it and wasn't happy with the deflection I noticed, which may or may not go away with the cladding but figured it was only a bit more so might as well beef it up.

 

Ohhh I see. I gotta look more into it. I've only worked with 80/20 a few times at work. Never ordered gussets.
I agree with you I think its great for the $ you can do it in cad, have it cut and just assemble at your place. For people in Condos HOA etc its a blessing.
What site* did you use?

 

I used the Series 10 stuff from Tnutz, which is equal to the 1" options from 80/20, just cheaper.

80/20 Extrusion talk
Here's a thread to a Vagabond Drifter owner that did an interior build out with aluminum extrusion. They no longer have their Drifter or interior.

They saved some money by ordering from several vendors and tapping the ends of the extrusions and making some brackets to attach them together. They did order the extrusions pre-cut though.

 

That might be a touch optimistic FWIW.
I put in a deposit in Nov, and still looking at Mid-April timeframe.

 

did you just put $500 down in Nov? or did you put the 50% deposit down?

Jealousy clouded my vision there for a bit!

 

good to know i put mine in on dec 7th maybe i will have my shocks before the camper they just got pushed back till march now king is like 20 weeks behind.

Yah same. I just removed all my wood based setup and it added up. That and my BAMF skids I swear the truck is a second faster
