4x4 wheel drive not smooth on turns

Yeah. This is what I know. Now the owner's manual says you should put your truck in 4wd every so often and that is good to get the grease spinning, but only do it going strait.

 

I guess my snapped axels in the past were just my imagination

 

I broke one of the front wheel drive axles on another older truck before just in snow.

 

Was this on a Toyota product? was it a rusted out piece of junk? that axle must have been near failure already.

Lots of rock crawling, lifted trucks, aftermarket low gearing, big tires. Never broke an axle. Not a common thing to hear about either.

 

No one said it was impossible. Simply implausible. If shafts were snapping every time things got bound up on high traction surfaces, Moab would be littered with Tacoma carcasses on every trail.

 

When it comes to mechanical components, one can "never say never". I also own a supercharged Mustang GT and reading Mustang forums, you would think not changing-out the stock oil pump gear, with a supercharger, was certain death for the engine. The shop that did the work on my car also has a race team that uses Mustangs, exclusively. When I asked about the OPG, the mechanic laughed and said "I'll take your money, if that's what you want, but I've never seen one break on a street car.".....point being we all know what opinions are like...

 

That bark of tires slipping on the slickrock is such a happy noise for me. I've taken a yearly trip to moab the last 15 years? Love it out there.

 

yeah some people don't have easy access to trails or fire roads, so going straight or relatively straight down the road in 4hi is fine. Or you can break into the local ice rink via the zamboni entrance and do 10 miles in laps around the rink.

Its those slow moving turns on pavement, especially sharp ones like in a parking lot that should be avoided. Binding when it happens is very apparent. You're only going to break something if you push it, or if an axle was already compromised then it might break but that's unlikely unless you ignore the binding. I would say that wheel hop on the trail is more risky than taking a high traction turn in 4wd.

People wheel in 4wd on rocky surfaces that have traction all day long without much issue, just to know when to push it and when to adjust your line or angle.

I don't think that 10 mile per month is a hard and fast rule either, I would bet that the majority of everyday 4x4 owners hardly use 4wd but a few times a year. I think it's more of a liability thing on Toyota's part but it definitely won't hurt to abide by it.

And, if you're old enough to remember, it was featured on Xtreme 4x4 on Spike TV in 2008.

 

I was in college in 2008. I remember that show but I did not have cable so I did not see much of it.

 

The ISUZU TOD (Torque on Demand) is the superior system for all 4WD applications.

a PWM clutch between front and rear axles. 4WD Low range is Locked. I sold the Trooper after getting the Taco. That Trooper had it's features!
