Fuel Additives Discussion

Searched for a thread on this already and nothing major came up and since I was just at Wal Mart I picked up a bottle of STP Fuel System cleaner for my next oil change. I was curious if anyone else uses these or if anyone thinks they are worth the extra 5 bucks every oil change.

Also if anyone has any other recommendations post them here.

 

I suggest you check out exactly what you want to achieve and how to do it properly. (not doubting your abilities, just for general information for everyone)

The only fuel additive I use is SeaFoam...

 

Don't use anything in my truck. Use it in my boat though.

Never heard or used seafoam but I gotta be honest I dont want something that fruity sounding in my engine, I mean it sounds like putting ballet sauce on a steak.

 

It blew the rear quarter of my truck off...

I personally wouldnt use anything... just good gas such as Chevron or Shell. I was traveling for work back and forth 600mi round trip for six weeks. I filled up and used octane boost/ fuel additives around the 3rd week every time I hit any kind of incline at freeway speeds (80mph) I could feel my fuel cutting out and after that my truck ran so sluggish. Id just stay away from those IMO

Back in the day I heard from two mechanic buddys that STP fouls plugs so I stayed away from that brand. Techron in the bottle every third oil change is my habit personally, MAF cleaner to the MAF sensor every time I change out air filter. Always runs with spirit.

 

while I agree that almost all those injector cleaners are total BS I use Lucas in my drag truck. It's not an injector cleaner, it's a lubricant and I don't know if it works or not but I'm not stopping now

This stuff is good stuff. BMW even recommends it.

But supplemental additives are much less necessary nowadays since most all fuels sold have to include additives that keep injectors clean and reduce valve deposits to help maintain emission control effectiveness. Ethanol itself does it and it's included in oxygenated fuels required in most densely populated areas and, in the winter, everywhere else.

Still, it absolutely can't hurt anything but your pocketbook for it's $15 price. That's absurd...the price, that is.

 

I have tried almost all the big additives in my motorcycle (which is sensitive to bad gas or good gas) and found that none of them really "boosted" performance. Some of them helped it run smoother, some didn't. The SeaFoam has been my go to since I did some test with it. My plugs and cyclinders are cleaner with I run SeaFoam (pulled the plugs and used a buddies snake camera to take a look around inside). I also SeaFoam my truck and my wife's car once a year.

 

I use one litre of Lucas fuel treatment once a month on all my vehicles.

 

I run the Lucas top end treatment twice a year maybe..........Hint - Buy the 32 oz bottle for 10.00 instead of 5 oz for 5.00.
