I'm not sure if the radios I saw came from that site or not. Just came up when I searched.

I don't think you can make something like that work in the Tacoma seeing how our AC is mechanically controlled.

You could by using a universal unit, like the one with the floating screen. But it would be a total waste of time. Would have all the useless HVAC UI cluttering it up. There’s a guy who has custom firmware where you can hide the UI bars on the top and bottom. Would still just be not worth it.

Not to mention it would block the OEM HVAC knobs and/or side vents depending on orientation of the screen. Lol and be a thief magnet.

Here was mine in my GX.

I regularly drive my neighbors Model S and the screen is not distracting at all. Almost everything can be controlled by the steering wheel controls.

The Dasaita or Joying Android headunits are probably the best compromise. larger screen, custom dash piece but retain all the factory HVAC and clock.

The new ones include Apple CarPlay and Android auto. After having a car with carplay I won't go back.

Picture below is not mine, I have one of these units arriving today and will install this week. It's not for someone who does not like to tinker. If you want it to just work, stick with a name brand double din carplay stereo.

Mounted that Dasaita unit. I have Gaia GPS running. This thing basically runs as an Android tablet.
Significant modifications and issues mounting this but I will be happy with it. There is a much larger thread with 45+ pages on this unit and the required issues. It's much much easier if you have an 05-11 tacoma. It's us later 2011-2015 guys who have issues with the hazard and clock area buttons. I just ordered an older stereo off ebay just to get a bracket to hold it.

Think about this for a sec. Using old-fashioned control knobs, how long do my eyes leave the road to change airflow from the floor registers to the dash vents and then lower the temperature? Currently, its less than one second. One quick glance to locate the necessary controls, then less than 5 seconds total for my hands to do the remainder of the operation by braille while my eyes are back on the road. How long would my eyes be off the road using a touchscreen with no tactile feedback, no set locations for the "buttons," and you have to scroll through a series of menus to perform the same two operations? Many seconds. And one final question, your honor. How quickly can road conditions change in front of me, if I'm not looking?

Is it even legal in your state? To me just another distraction to take you yes and mind off your primary purpose. That is driving fron one place o the next without killing someone.

I agree, physical knobs/buttons beat on screen bullshit any day. Less of a distraction. I shouldn’t have to fuckin look for 5 seconds to press a button to open a menu to then press an on-screen button to change my HVAC fan speed or mode, which is why I cant wrap my head around why OEM manufacturers do it. Lexus does it for the GX. How that passes a safety check when things like phones get banned in states while driving is beyond me.

I should be able to reach my hand over and not even really have to look cause I can feel the knob and see it out of my peripheral to change an AC setting.

Even the non-nav setup I now have in my GX is a compromise...uses buttons instead of rotary knobs so I still have to look but at least it’s tactile once I see the button.

At 55 mph how far does a truck travel in 5 seconds? And what is on the road that you will not see in that distance.

Well let's do the math, shall we?

    (55mph ÷ 60 min/hr ÷ 60 sec/min) x 5280 ft/mi x 5 sec = 403 feet.

Let's not forget braking distance, which if you're in an empty truck on good tires and smooth dry pavement, you can get it done in less than 200 feet. Possibly even 150 if you're on top of your braking game.

If a car pulls out in front of you and you're inattentive for exactly 5 seconds, that car needs to be at least 550 feet away, over a 10th of a mile, or you're smacking that ass.

    Math is fun.

Or someone steps out from behind something into the road inside that 403 feet. So you have maybe 350 buffer area after you identify and react to the problem. Sounds like a hurting or more coming up.

I had the alpine halo 9 in my truck and a few days ago I upgraded to the 11” model. Looks huge in pics but surprisingly wasn’t that big of a difference in the truck and still doesn’t cover the ac vents 8A00E53E-23F5-42E9-8905-A7B8227A78B3.jpg587DA485-D4B5-4CA9-8FBB-52A72AAB0D6D.jpg350614E9-35F4-46B4-AB90-7151C5E9C3FA.jpg

This explains a lot. Probably why the Tesla in front of me, who 2 car lengths from the intersection looked up from his screen to realize the light had turned yellow, and there’s a cop, slammed his brakes going 45 stopping fully past the line and into the intersection, then me behind him in my 10k# work truck with no possible way to not hit him. Then it’s still my fault because I hit him.

You forgot about the distance consumed during human reaction time, roughly 0.2 seconds. Roughly the length of the truck, about 25 feet.

Its sad that many drivers forget about distance and speed and attention.

Instead of the Tesla screen, why not go all the way to mount a SmartTV?? Good grief.....what a distraction.

Yup, pretty much what I was told, well then you must have been following too close. I was maybe 3-4 car lengths, and it was accelerating away from me. I think the biggest issue was that the Nissan titan & nv brakes absolutely suck. It was sent back to the dealer several times, we finally surrendered to the fact the brakes are just bad. Low pedal unless you pump the pedal. Rolls away stopped unless you pumped the pedal as you stopped. Mushy pedal unless you constantly trigger the abs. Rotors looked like shattered glass every time the pads needed replacing.

When I'm hit with a suddenly yellow, first thing I do is look at what's behind me. If it's a vehicle that won't be able to stop, I run it. If I'm being tailgated, or they have their face in a phone, I run it. If I can stop behind the line without screeching the tires, I'll stop. It's definitely a tricky split second decision. So I try to think ahead, decide on a point where I should or shouldn't stop as I approach an intersection. Try, but not always, sometimes daydreaming, or thinking about something else.
