Mine is a '18 and I did get the TSB done. It helped with the constant hunting and the surging. But on the freeway here, it's all level changes, and yes it does fine in S-5, and the mileage isn't too much affected. So, now I don't really use the regular Automatic unless the roads change to long and flat out towards the desert areas, or short errands and in the city driving. But in most of my driving 6th is annoying to me. Guess I just needed to vent.
    Love the truck though!

EDIT, as you stated maybe another update/later is available I'll look into that. It needs to go in got the fuel pump thing anyway.

This may not be the answer you are looking for, but you might find the most satisfying thing is to get the latest ECU update and then learn to accept the transmission for what it is.

I’ve mentioned before that this is an issue on mountain bike forks where you have riders trying to reconfigure their compression and dampening to match what they got used to in 2004 instead of learning the way their new $1,000 fork operates and “feels.”

What did you drive prior to 2018? That might be telling.

The 2017 MTs, 2019 ATs, and 2020s have received pretty much the same updates recently. The 2016 ATs and 2018s have not seen a similar update since the one that was released in the middle of 2018. Keep an eye out either for an update / revision to the newer TSBs (TSB-0043-20 or TSB-0092-20) or maybe a new one to cover these remaining Tacos?

Don't worry, 6th gear is just as useless on the manual transmission.

It works fine in my tacoma, but driving in the ECT mode locks out 6th gear. I guess its normal for towing...you wouldn't need 6th pulling a trailer.

Works perfectly on my ‘21 OR and there is hardly any flat land around here.

2021 AT owner here. I live in a mountainous/hilly region and it definitely does like to shift in and out on any incline. Also likes to try and shutter/buck if you're going slow (40-45mph ish) and barely tipping in the throttle. Super annoying, but I'm slowly getting used to it. Only thing I don't like about the truck, honestly. I came from a 2009 4.0 with the 5 speed automatic, just thought I hated that transmission till I bought this truck.
