200k+ Miles - How they doing?

Hey fellas - curious on how your 200k+ mile trucks are holding up? Not concerned about frames, etc... more curious on engine/tranny/electronics.

I've had 2 Tacomas: 06 TRD Sport, and an 09 TRDOR 4x4. Both were wonderful with the 09 making it to 100k miles before I peddled it.

I'm looking again at getting back into a Tacoma and my preferred years are mostly in the 100k club... with me keeping this one for a few years, was curious how they are holding up over 150k miles and even 200k miles.

Thoughts?

 

At 140k I have replaced a steering rack, lower control arm, all idler pulleys, a brake caliper, 3 sets of rear leaf springs, 3 door lock actuators, a blower motor/pigtail, steering wheel spiral cable, and I have a leaking CV axle on the drivers side that will need to be dealt with sooner rather than later.

All in sunny no-salt california.

I’m buying a Ranger if I get a mid-size next time around. F-150 if I go full size.

190K here. Other than stuff i have broke myself wheeling, pretty much changed plugs, oil, belt, and a pulley here and there.

 

I just sold an 06 Sport with 194k miles. Other than wear on the interior truck was all original. Fords? No thanks I’ve owned several and they all had one thing in common, spent a lot of time needing work. No thanks but good luck to you

 

At 140k the ranger is going to be at the junk yard

 

180K for me, bought it at 70K. Passenger occupant seat sensor became uncalibrated, I recalibrated it myself. I have to occasionally wiggle the blower motor resistor but still works fine. That’s it. Everything looks and functions like the day I bought it. Except the dents and scraps I put on it wheeling lol

 

Did you replace the spiral cable with OEM parts? My cruise control is a bit hard to turn on, I might need to do this.

 

Don’t be daft. Is the Toyota koolaid really that good? Have you even driven one? Very few modern vehicles will have problems going past 140k...

One of my local subs is running a small fleet of rangers. Those things get ragged out and put away wet. They’ve had zero problems putting 30k miles on them a year in rough off-highway 4x4 type conditions.

 

203k miles, runs like a champ. Other than regular maintenance everything is good. Next big project is to rip the carpet POR15 the floor and install all weather carpet looking forward to it.

 

Yes, Longo Toyota online (or mcgeorge... or San Diego... I can’t remember).

They initially sent the wrong one (without steering wheel controls). I try to go OEM when possible - particularly with airbag/safety related items. You wheel need to swap your wheel position sensor over to the new unit.


As for Tacoma’s - they are like any vehicle. You are going to get a bell curve of maintenance outcomes. Mine has received meticulous maintenance and is still falling apart. Others do nothing and go for 500k.

The best you can do is try to find one that has at least had the minimum maintenance done at regular intervals and wasn’t treated like garbage by the owner. Even then you’ll be playing the “I hope it wasn’t built Friday after lunch” game.

Almost all modern vehicles offered for sale in the US will fall into similar categories.

 

275k here. Replaced the motor at 272k. Tranny was replaced at around 250k while trouble shooting but the original was still good

 

Almost 170K - bought at 75K in 2012.

I’ve had the AC charged 3x. They never find any leaks.

Other than the frame, the weakest link, so to speak, is the calipers, which were driving me crazy for a while. They are not cheap.

My wife’s 12 Highlander we bought new had a wheel bearing go bad, which the dealer took care of just outside warranty. That’s it.

I can’t imagine you’ll do better with a Ranger.

 

05 4runner at 215k miles. Not a Tacoma, but same 4.0 v6 and A750F transmission. I haven't had it since new, but I know that there were 2 CVs done in the past and I did one, replaced both front wheel bearings and a wheel speed sensor, front calipers seized when it sat for a bit during first year of school, I rebuilt the LCAs, 2 door lock actuators, the fuel tank straps rusted, my evaporator core is leaking (this might only be a 4th gen thing idk), and I changed a few fluids. Oil Level has never dropped from burning it off or anything

Main issue on 11/05 build date and earlier 1GR-FE's is the older head gasket design that has the possibility of failure. I've lost about 3" of coolant in the reservoir during a little more than a year, but the radiator stays full. I get the blackstone analysis on every change and theres not enough coolant contamination in the oil to be a real issue, so it must just be burning off.

Avoids the head gasket and motor mount problem
And avoids the newer trucks with the air pump BS

I've driven fords before and they're very nice but after 5 years they rattle like beer cans from my experience. And the new ranger is nice but feels too car like inside for me- plus for the price I'd rather get the F150. That's the difference though- you can drive a 20 year old Toyota truck with 200k miles and it still feels as solid and put together over bumps as the day it was new.

 

mid size/full sizes prices are pretty consistent across brands.

A 20 year truck same as new? Come on man, it’s that kind of hyperbole that has polished Toyota’s name plate to the point it is today.

 

08 with 206k. Bought it used with 77k on it. So far I've changed out the idler pulley, AC condenser, all 3 U joints, axle shafts, brakes, interment steering shaft, and wheel bearings. Mind you this wasn't all at once. I did the original spark plugs at 150k and quite frankly they looked incredibly good considering they were the original.

I keep a fairly consistent maintenance schedule. Oil/ filter every 6k. Air filter and cabin filter every other oil change. Haven't touched any other fluid on the truck except windshield washer fluid and maybe a bit of coolant every once in a blue moon.

Searching my vin online when I originally bought it noticed the owner was pretty religious with the maintenance.
