MT in lieu of regear with big tires?

    I live at 5000 feet, in the summers we see 8-9000 feet density alititude. that is going to be about a 25% power loss in those conditions. I want to run 33's and a 3" lift. Since both the MT and AT have a double overdrive (5th and 6th) the MT has a 4:30 gear in it. Wouldn't a MT truck eliminate the need to re-gear the truck? on the highway you can just not use 6th gear if its a problem

    That's been my thoughts as well. Seems like we can run 33s without needing to regear. Larger size than that, you start to get into regear territory.

    I live at 6K and drive down to 4500 and back a couple times a week. I have a 2020 6MT TRD OR and recently got a set of 33" Toyo MTs (255/85r16). While I can feel the difference with the heavy E rated tires, going up and down the mountain has been no problem with the manual - granted, it's winter so I'm not seeing the higher temperatures yet.

    The freeway at 4500 feet is also fine and 6th is still useable.

    I am utah as well. did you drive an AT truck to compare, do you think there would be a big difference with the auto in our area?

    Denver area here - MT with skinny 33's (E rated) I didn't notice much of a difference from 31.5 to 33. But I also have OVtune and it helps. I carry a lot of weight as well, prob 500-700 pounds over stock. Sometimes I think 4.88 would be nice though. I think that the skinny 33 is the way to go compared to the 285's.

    Nice. I test drove both an AT and an MT. I would definitely recommend trying both first. I thought the AT was alright, with annoying characteristics. The MT just felt better to me. In my specific situation I live up a mountain and in my AT land cruiser, it gets old shifting back and forth and not having enough power to make it up in 3rd, so it has to drop back to 2nd constantly. With the Tacoma, I just throw it in 3rd and cruise all the way up 40-55mph.

    I think if you live and drive in mostly flat areas the AT would be fine, and there are tunes out there to fix the annoying traits. But the gear ratio of the MT is nice and after regearing my last two trucks it's nice to just leave it alone for now.

    I ordered my Tacoma from Mark Miller back in July and it showed up in October. They were having covid supply chain issues at that point and the manuals were relatively rare so I had to wait.

    What you're showing says all trucks with manuals have 4.30's, all 4 cylinder trucks have 4.30's, all automatics have 3.91's.

    Not sure where you see any AT has a lower ratio than a MT.

    Transmission is the only factor for the gears. All V6 ATs are 3.909 and all V6 MTs are 4.30. Other than 4th, the transmission gearing is quite a bit different also.

    I test drove a TRD pro. its the first of this generation of tacoma I have ever driven. I don't know if I can handle the AT, on the highway it just wanted to dump into 6th gear and lug the engine down. When I add 33's its going to get even worse. add in hot, warm weather, even worse. The good news is seating position is fine, dash, controls, etc are all doable. The dealer only had 1 truck for sale, the TRD pro I was driving. Thinking I just want a cement off road, short bed.
