I just PM’d Meso this same question, but can anyone give me a run down of how they utilized their heat shielding? Picked up Meso’s used blankets and picking up lava wrap for the DP’s.

But, I have no idea what I’m doing with anything on this list:

That recall campaign seems to be expanding and that could put you in the group of russian roulette of pumps to fail. If it does fail while you are in full boost, you could be kicking and cursing at yourself. Because you will be acquiring the powermax, it would make a lot of sense to hang on to that pump/controller incase you’d ever want a bit more, along with added piece of mind.

Maybe... just seems like a giant waste, especially on install time. I’m definitely not going to install this “just in case”...

If I don’t have a recall out it should be fine.
If not, the fuel pump should be required and included with the kit.

2 hours install time for me if that furthers your decision.

Just to clarify, “just incase” it goes....it won’t be exclusively just the pump that’s goes but it may take your precious engine with it. Especially if you don’t plan on closely monitoring with a wideband.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but there is a warranty that comes with this kit that would cover that.

Under 60k miles, base boost, no recall, and professional install isn’t required as long as “I take pictures and document install” per OV.

Like I said, I thinks it’s unreasonable to expect to have to do this upgrade when the maker even says it’s not required :notsure:
If I’m wrong, please tell me @OVTune

OV isn't going to warrant heat damage on external parts, only internal.

I don't blame him, if you got a lose wire that touches something and melts that's on you.

The heat protection is nothing but precautionary.

Not what we’re talking about... talking about the engine grenad’ing from fuel pump failure

I am doing all heat protection mods, including turbo blankets I just grabbed from Meso

Interesting read. Not just a problem for 3rd gens. Guessing every Toyota with a low pressure fuel pump made by Denso back to 2013 is going to be affected eventually.

    https://www.carcomplaints.com/news/2020/toyota-fuel-pump-recall-fix-lawsuit.shtml

That being said...if you haven't had an issue with your pump yet... Think about it...how long do the impellers need to be soaked before they fail? How many miles? If you have a 2017 and it hasn't failed yet...it probably isn't going to. Just saying.

If you aren't on the recall and the engine grenades, you are covered by Mat. If the recall comes out and you can get the pump replaced then get it replaced. If it blows and there is a recall later, take the turbos off, take it to Toyota and warranty it.

Does anyone have the post of Matt stating warranty, there's nothing of it on the website and nothing of it in any box you receive.
I'd also be very weary of OVTunes insurance covering it, Idk that Matt is going to pay out of pocket for this.
So it could be discrepancies of insurance and such, all I'm saying is it's not as easy as a stock engine failing after 10k miles and factory warranty.

We got a tractor trailer back from a shop and within 3k miles it burned to the ground, that shops insurance were pushing the issue, but ultimately paid out.
However because we spend so many thousands with said shop they were going to pay the truck value rather insurance did or not.

I’m currently sitting at 68,000 miles on my 2018. @OVTune is there anything I should be looking into when the shop does the install?
Any wear and tear parts I should replace at this point before doing the turbos?

I got your messages and am working on getting it out, I just haven't messaged you back yet.

I have not released our final warranty information yet, and have to make some changes to it. Primarily TBS / Recalls.

And yes if you have the fuel pump recall and your pump dies in boost you can absolutely blow the engine.

we have to remove the exhaust from an approved mod, because overboosting is more than expected (unless you have our fuel pump setup to compensate)

Look at it this way, if you have the upgraded pump it effectively eliminates the grey area for OV to not honour the warranty if you were to blow your engine. Iirc, in order to qualify for the warranty you have to be running under 10lbs of boost, stock exhaust, and no outstanding recall anyways, so with that said if you truly think you will only be running the 7lb spring without a boost controller than there is virtually no benefit of the powermax turbos, you could swap turbos with someone that has a base kit and recoup a healthy chunk of change back. I figured this was worth mentioning, even if you don’t take the advice it might atleast convince someone else and help you sell.

For sure, I always planned on going with a base kit but this is what fell in my lap.
If anyone is open to paying me to upgrade to big boys I’m open to it, but I’m taking the positives of better top end performance and higher base boost power as a silver lining
