Help me fix this demon possessed computer!

Ok so my sister's laptop has been run for a year without antivirus! . Now when she is on the computer it redirects any of her websearchs to other websites. usually the virus ridden kind. I tried to install avg free to get it clean and the virus would always cancel the download. She went and bought norton today and told me to put it on there. I put it on safe mode and installed it. After a full system scan and fix it only showed 209 tracking cookies and the internet is still acting dumb. What else can I do?

 

System restore to an unaffected day? If the laptop came with recovery CD's, then start fresh again.

 

malwarebytes. You will probably have to install in safe mode.

 

Install Malware Bytes & run a full scan, most likely will need to do this in Safe Mode. Depending on what pops up you may need to google search the popup to find what process you will need to end task in the Task Manager prior to being able to remove it.

 

Heck just wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall the operating system. Get an extermal hard drive and make a copy of the hard drive. I use acronis true image for this purpose.

 

Well I managed to get the norton installed in safe mode but it doesn't find anything other than tracking cookies when it scan. Will something else get the virus off better than norton?

agreed with the norton. If it isn't a virus then what is it? I'm not very good when it comes to computers. Hell I do well to navigate this site

hell I'm no guru either but I have had this program maliciously install itself on friends computers. It's some code written to re-direct. Malwarebytes is the only software I've found to get rid of it.

Heck, if I could write code I'd like to really screw the people who make this kind of crap.

Had luck using "combofix" too, free also at "Bleeping computer" website.

 

How can I get malwarebytes on there? I can get to the website but it redirects me to something else when I go to download. In the task manager under the process tab there is a "winlogon.exe." with no user and no description. I looked it up and it says that it sometimes has a vundo trojan on it. and alot of the symptoms sound similar to what it has.

 

you'll need to download on another unaffected computer and load on a flash drive to install on the infected computer in safe mode.

You should restore to the original factory settings. Most computers come with the system restore on a separate hard drive partition. Google system restore and the computer manufacturer and model number. It's usually something like "hold down the f11 key during reboot".

Only problem is that you will lose all the info that is currently on the computer.

Then, after the system restore, the first thing you need to do is slap you sister and the second thing is to install virus software.

Personally, I use a Mac so I have no worries. However, we had to do a system restore on my sons HP Mini on the weekend.

go to download.com and find malwarebytes. Download it to a USB flash drive. Open the infected computer in Safe mode and run the malwarebytes program from the USB flash drive.
If malwarebytes will not fix it you probably need to do a fresh install of your operating system (not before making a copy of your current hard drive though).

 

You can start in safemode with networking. That will give you internet without redirecting you. I had this same issue. Which website does it send you to?

Malwarebytes for the motherfucking win. I was livid at first cause I was away from home and didn't have my desktop to help DLshit off of to rid it. Then I did the Malwarebytes...fucker is GONE!

 

I've run my Desktop for over 5 years without antivirus on there. Every once in a while I'll hit up Trendmicro.com and scan it.

 

System restore usually doesn't work on viruses... it's easy to do so you can give it a try with nothing to lose.

Most new computers don't come with system disc's anymore. They expect you to burn you own back-ups and since it doesn't sound like your sister's too computer savvy she probably didn't do that so don't spend a lot of time slapping her around because she can't find them.

If that doesn't do it, as mentioned before also, bleeping computer is the beast. They'll help you identify exactly what you're dealing with and take you step by step through the process of removal. Be prepared to go through the registy... at this point I usually bring the computer home to my house so I can fool with it at my leisure. It can get time comsuming & unnerving. BTW it's free although they take donations.

AVG free is an excellent antivirus. All the computer geeks/network nazis at work recommend it and I've been using it for 3-4 yrs.
