Ember tries to keep up, but the Malinois can just flat out run.

My one grandson has a malinois, which he has trained. Damn if that thing doesn't try to bite me every time I go over to visit. Naturally, I stay away from it.

Might want to check if “bite pop pop” is part of the training.

It might be although, as I understand it, that dog goes after just about everybody but its trainer.

Don’t think I would want a dog like that in our house. Mustang is very ‘clear’, you’d really have to make yourself a high threat to get that kind of response, and even then he would give a ton of warning... He’s very stable.

My post might be a slight exaggeration. I am told that because I take a defensive position when I see him, that's why he appears aggressive with me. So, maybe it's me. I know he is going through the same training as a police dog, with my grandson and an ex-officer who trained malinois for police departments.

I am by no means an "expert" but I did spend a couple of years working with others training patrol dogs. Gotta say, that would not be my choice. But if your grandson is interested, his commitment needs to be for the life of the dog and if he cannot keep the dog, it's not a dog that should be re-homed.

I hate to be so direct but it's important. Especially if the dog will also be a family dog.

Yes. That's his interest. He is 14, has had this dog for about 4 years, has been through multiple trainings with the ex officer who trained police dogs for a living and takes the dog to numerous competitions throughout the area. I don't know much about them myself, but found this on the web:
"There’s a reason that Belgian Malinois are often called “maligators.”
These dogs are bred to be super-tenacious biting machines that take down police suspects and trespassers. Their “bite-hard-and-hold-on” instinct is some of the most extreme out there.
If you’ve always had almost any other breed and just got your first Belgian Malinois, hang tight and know that extreme biting is very normal for the breed."
I have a feeling my grandson will be a dog trainer himself someday as this is his primary interest.

Friendly advice, take it for what’s it’s worth - these dogs can be ‘social’ off the field. Mustang also does that same training (For that matter, so did Ember - the boxer in the pic). Both have their BH titles, and Mustang will go for his IGP 1 this year (after more work tracking). It’s my wife’s hobby, I still wouldn’t want a dog I was worried about being a bite risk in my home...

For sure. But when the breed description offers a warning about mouthy?

    Dutchies and mals are mouthy

They need a dominant strong pack leader and CONSTANT training

My dutch has bitten me twice early in our bonding and he is extremely protective but well disciplined and still responds to my commands when he gets into protective mode

    Some clarification though

My dutch has bitten me twice as a bite

He puts his mouth on my arms a LOT because thats part of how he herds and shows excitement...it scares new people when they first experience it but could be construed as biting
